It has been days since Palassiah fell.

The city lies in ruins, smoke rising from crumbled buildings. They called it a massacre. "The Great Slaughter of Palassiah," they said—one of many names for what has become a tragic memory. The hatred between humans and us has only amplified, but none of that matters as I stand here. Knee-deep in the soil of what was once my home.

I can't move. Tears stream down my cheeks as I stare at the destruction, guilt rising inside like a heavy weight, eating away parts of me. I want to say something—anything—but the words won't come.

"I'm sorry," I whisper, my voice swallowed by the wind. "I tri-."

Suddenly, a voice interrupts the stillness. "Behind you."

I turn sharply, wiping my tears, but see no one. Confusion sets in, my heart pounding faster.

"Over here," the voice comes again, more urgent. This time, I whip my head around and spot something.

A message.

Carved into the cement of a destroyed building, glowing runes pulse with faint light. I step closer, hand trembling as I trace my fingers along the strange symbols. The moment my skin touches them, my fingers absorb the glow, turning a lighter shade and I understand the message written there:

"The portal has been found. Be my follower and protection you shall receive."

And I think:

This is insanity. -Page 45

This is the solution. -Page 21

"Did you cause this obliteration?" I yell out furiously. -Page 42
