Evaelysse stood next to Jace as Rhaenyra held council again. Her hair had been let out of its braids, and fell in loose waves about her back.
"It's no easy thing for a man to be a dragon slayer." Daemon said. "But dragons can kill dragons, and have. The simple truth is this: we have more dragons than Aegon."
"Viserys spoke often of the Valyrian histories. I know them well." said Rhaenyra. "When dragons flew to war, everything burned. I do not wish to rule over a kingdom of ash and bone."
"Are you considering the Hightower's terms, your grace?" Lord Bartimus asked.
"As Queen, what is my true duty to the realm, Lord Bartimus?" Rhaenyra said. "Ensuring peace and unity, or that I sit the Iron Throne no matter the cost?"
"What's your father talking?" asked Daemon.
"My father is dead." Rhaenyra replied. "And he chose me as his successor. To defend the Realm, not cast it headlong into war."
"The enemy have declared war!" Daemon exclaimed, pacing around the room. "What are you going to do about it?"
After a pause, Rhaenyra spoke again. "Clear the room."
Evaelysse left with Jace and Luke. The younger boy soon walked off to attend to other things, but Jace stayed with her.
"We should do something to help." Jace told her, as they made their way to their chambers.
"And what would you have us do?" Evaelysse asked.
"I'm not sure. Anything. I don't like just waiting about, letting the adults do everything." He ran his hand through his hair, tilting his head back. Evaelysse's neck suddenly felt very hot.
"It's not like Rhaenyra's going to let us do anything dangerous, though." Evaelysse pointed out. "The most she'd ask us to do is to send ravens to Lord Stark, or something boring like that."
Jace didn't speak for a moment. They began to reach the door to his chambers, and Evaelysse suddenly had a very weird feeling in her stomach, like someone had tied it in a knot.
"I guess.." Jace trailed off, as they reached his door. There were no guards outside; no doubt they were with Rhaenyra or Daemon. Jace's face lit up suddenly, like he'd had an amazing idea. "Lyssa, that's perfect!"
"It is?" Evaelysse muttered, not knowing what he was on about.
"Yes! I can ask my mother to send us, instead of ravens." Jace beamed at her. "Dragons are much more convincing than birds."
"That's the dumbest idea I've ever heard." Evaelysse deadpanned. "What would happen if Aemond showed up? Vhagar is about three times bigger than Vermax."
"She's barely bigger than Vermithor." Jace argued. "Besides, she's needed to guard King's Landing."
"It's too dangerous." Evaelysse shook her head. "Rhaenyra would never agree. Forget it."
Jace looked disheartened. "Yes, I suppose so." He stared at her for a moment more, his eyes flickering across her face. "Goodnight, Lyssa."
"Night, Jace." Evaelysse murmured, as he opened his door. As she walked away, she couldn't help but feel a slight sense of disappointment, but couldn't at all think what for.

The next morning, Evaelysse was at yet another council meeting. This time, she was stood next to Luke, as Jace seemed to be avoiding her. This hurt, but she tried not to dwell on it too much.
