At 7:50pm Ethan was knocking on the door of my cabin to pick me up. I was dressed casually in a pair of jeans and a camp pinewood t-shirt. Apparently tonight we'd be meeting our campers and the other counselors. I was actually excited to see which girls would be assigned to me. I already knew that I wouldn't treat them the way that Alyssa treated me. I was actually going to help these girls work through their problems.
"You ready?" Ethan asked. He was dressed similarly to me in a pair of jeans and the camp t-shirt.
I nodded and Ethan grabbed my hand before leading me to the large outdoor fire pit.
"What do you think about Alyssa running the place?" Ethan questioned as we got closer.
I shrugged. "I don't really care as long as she leaves us alone. It's a shame about her parents though."
"I know, I looked it up and apparently they died in some freak boating accident. A yacht ran into Alyssa's parents one and damaged the side. Alyssa's parents were sleeping below the deck and drowned when the ship started to leak. The report said that they were trapped in their cabin." Ethan explained.
I shuddered at the reference to drowning. It made me think of Brandon Faye, and ultimately of what Jesse did to him. Thankfully we had just reached the fire pit so I didn't have time to dwell on this. Ethan and I took our seats on one of the wooden logs. I took a look around and noticed some other counselors were already there too. Most of them were girls but some of them were male. There was one guy in particular that stood out to me.
He was sitting directly across from me, green eyes staring straight at me. Even from the distance I recognized Jesse. His dark hair had grown longer and was currently wet and messed up, like he had just taken a shower. He was dressed in all black and that of course gave him a dangerous look. All in all, he looked really good.
Jesse sat silently, watching me take him in with a blank look on his face. I watched his eyes travel to Ethan and our intertwined hands, his face fell and his eyes darkened. I tried to get him to look me in the eyes but Jesse shifted in his seat, avoiding me completely.
Great, just great.
This was supposed to be my second chance at this camp. This was supposed to be my summer. Why was Jesse here? Surely he was too old to be camper. That could only mean one thing, he was a counselor. But why? He hated this place so why would he return?
My attention was diverted however when vans started to pull up and people started to get out of them. The campers were here.
At that moment Alyssa strode forward and spoke into her mike. "I need all the counselors to sit in the chronological order of their cabins. Taylor will be passing out signs that have your cabin numbers on it. Hold them up so that the campers know where to sit."
After we were handed our signs Ethan and I said our goodbyes and went to our proper seats. It just so happened that I was sitting in between cabin 7 and 9, and Jesse was the counselor of cabin 7. He reluctantly took a seat on the log next to mine.
"Hey." I whispered as he took his seat.
"Cabin 13." He muttered.
"What?" I asked, not sure that I heard him right.
"Meet me at cabin 13 after this." He repeated.
My eyes widened. Cabin 13. It was still here after all this time?
"I'm with Ethan now." I let him know weakly.
Jesse scoffed. "I know, I do have eyes Sydney."
I blushed and looked down.
"I just want to catch up. Please, come." Jesse continued.
"Fine." I breathed.
Jesse smiled. "Good."
We turned our attention to the group of angry kids coming towards us. I smiled as four girls sat down in my section. I turned around in my seat to speak with them.
"So you guys are all in cabin 8?" I asked.
One of the girls, a brunette, rolled her eyes. "That would be why we sat here."
I narrowed my eyes at the girl. I could tell that we were going to have problems in the future.
"Anyways," I sighed, "Why don't we all introduce and say a little something about ourselves? I'll go first, my name is Sydney and I'm going to be your counselor for the summer. I actually came here two years ago and stayed in cabin 8 too."
"Cool," the girl with attitude said sarcastically, "Well my name is Courtney and I enjoy setting small animals on fire. It's my thing." Her eyes glittered in the camp fire.
What the hell?
"Um okay, what about you?" I pointed at a skinny blonde girl.
"I'm Elease and I'm here because I chew and spit." She said, picking at her nails
I frowned. "I'm sorry, what?"
Elease rolled her eyes. "I chew my food to get the taste, and then spit it out and save it in bags so that I don't get fat. If you have a problem with me doing that...I don't care."
Well... she was going to be a tough one to get through to. I could tell by her attitude that she could care less about authority.
"And you?" I said warily. She had long purple hair that was dark at the top and got lighter as it went down.
"My name is Stephanie and I'm here because I like alcohol."
I sign in relief, finally someone relatively normal.
"My alcohol level was once .26% I've gotten my stomach pumped 3 times already." She finished.
My face blanched. How is she still alive when at .8 you're considered drunk?
"How old are you?"
Stephanie grinned. "16."
This girl is obviously not going to make it to 30.
"What about you?" I ask the last girl. She has dark brown hair and blue eyes. She kind of looked innocent with her big eyes and young face.
"My name is Madison and I'm here because I slept with my teacher."
Well there goes that innocent theory.
I'm going to have my work cut out for me this summer, aren't I?
I looked up and noticed Jesse staring at me. There was a ghost of a smile on his face.
Then again, maybe it won't be so bad?
