The Homicide department offices resembled a busy market, unlike the ordered chaos at the Hospital, the station seemed to be in turmoil. This shootout has had the department moving in all directions, interviewing people, releasing bodies and falling into dead ends as suspects are needed.James walked in trying to avoid getting his shoulder knocked again, He got to his desk and found another file waiting for him. Placing the one he carried on the table to pick up the new file Captain Kraft approached him looking agitated asking, “Did Zulu give you something to go with, if not, I need extra hands on this shootout and have no time putting resources on dead leads. ”
James had to choose his next words carefully as he did not want the case to seem like it was running cold. “Where is Andrews? I thought she was running point on this one”? Asked James as he attempted to change the subject “She said she has a lead to look into, now tell me what you got so that I can decide how we moving, I have two cases and the Mayor wants answers” James opened the new file and saw that it was a report from ballistic. “I have news from ballistics, they did not take long and I think I know why, according to this, we already have a similar bullet sitting in our evidence room”. This new information startled Kraft more than it did James. “What do you mean we have a similar one in our evidence?” Asked Kraft as he took the file away from James. “It means the same gun that killed Toolkit ended Smiles” answered James “And probably the same killer” added James.
Kraft read through the file, “you mean one of our corpses is the killer?” asked Kraft. “That’s hard to say, we need the gun and then fingerprint it, but this means that the two crimes are linked and since we don’t have the gun with us, I don’t think it is one of our corpses.” James looked through his table. “The person who pulled this must have either been part of the first wave of the gun fight or the second one I thought was back up. Either way, the target was Toolkit.” He found what he was looking for. “I gotta go,” he said “Where to?” asked Kraft as James walked fast to the exit, avoiding people and leaving Kraft in question.
Moving back to his office Kraft heard his name being called. He turned to see a well-dressed man in a grey Italian suit, Tall and lean with grey hair sprouting on the side. He looked young, the captain thought “You must be Captain Kraft, did you get my letter?” Kraft looked confused as he did not understand what the man spoke of, he was still trying to figure out who the man was. Noticing this confusion the man introduced himself. “I am Mike Mlangeni, but you can call me Councillor Mike since the election results are in”.
The Captain registered the name, but not the face. This man was the newly elected councillor of the area, he also had the backing of the Mayor. “My letter came in through my boss the Mayor, it spoke of our concerns regarding the safety of our people during our rally tomorrow.” The letter came to view he remembered it. A gift from the Chief. He was not happy to get such a statement from the Major. “Oh yes, I remember, why don’t we discuss this in my office” said Kraft as he needed to isolate the problem.
He knew the Mayor had taken interest in the case, but did not expect him to send someone to look into it. “I take it you have taken precautions for our event tomorrow; I don’t want my followers dying over some gang violence,” Mike said as he sat in front of a messy desk. “I assure you; we have things under control but I think you are in the wrong department Mr Mlangeni, We don’t deal with crowd control, only Murders,” said Kraft as he sat opposite Mike. “I can see that” said Mike as he looked at the chaos that was moving outside the office. “It is nice that you join our community at this time, your office needs to know the kind of troubles we are handling here so that it can start helping in combating it”. A smile grew on Mike's face as the Kraft finished talking. “Captain, are you trying to say that my office takes up law enforcement? I thought that was your department. I am a man of the people” Kraft leaned back on his chair “What good is the man of the people if he doesn’t help the people?” he said this as he looked Mike dead in the eyes. Continuing he said “I have seen countless like you come and go, leave this place worse than you found it, praising the people and saying we are for the people, well me and my men may not be politicians but we are for the people and we die for them when we do our job”.
“Then it is safe to say that tax payers’ money is well spent here, but I still see some room for improvement, Andres, can I call you Andres?” Kraft sat up eyes still fixed to the councillor. “Mr Mlangeni, as we have already established that your rally tomorrow is crowd control’s jurisdiction, all I can tell you is that we have the murder cases under control, so since this is not a social visit and I have answered your question, I think we are down here.” Kraft stood up and headed for the door and opened it “Unless you have anything else to discuss, or add to our investigations I suggest you give us some room to be at service to the people” Mike stood up hiding his anger as best he could and stepped out the office. Kraft watched Mike walk through the chaos and out the department. “This is going to be an interesting partnership” thought Kraft as he closed the door and went back to his desk.
