---It was late, and the dorms were finally calm after the chaotic dinner, teeth-brushing disaster, and an evening of wrestling six hyper toddlers into bed. Heeseung, exhausted beyond measure, let out a long sigh of relief as he settled onto the couch with a blanket, thinking he might actually get a few hours of rest.
The six boys were finally asleep, snuggled into their tiny beds. Heeseung had pushed them all into one room to make it easier to keep an eye on them, setting up their small beds like a mini nursery. It had taken every ounce of patience to settle them down, but finally, they were all tucked in.
Heeseung closed his eyes, feeling the heaviness of the day weighing on him. Just as he was about to drift off, a faint rumble sounded outside. His eyes snapped open.
Thunder.
He glanced out the window, watching as dark clouds gathered quickly in the night sky. The wind picked up, and a distant flash of lightning illuminated the room for just a second.
"Great," Heeseung muttered. Storms were the last thing he needed.
As if on cue, a loud boom of thunder roared through the air, shaking the windows. Heeseung shot up from the couch. He knew exactly what that meant.
Seconds later, the dorm filled with the sounds of crying.
First, it was Ni-ki. His wails pierced through the quiet, high-pitched and panicked. Heeseung darted to the room where the boys were sleeping. Ni-ki was sitting up in his bed, clutching his blanket tightly, his little face scrunched up in fear.
“Ni-ki, shh, it’s okay,” Heeseung said softly, rushing to his side. He lifted him out of the bed and held him close, trying to soothe him.
But the crying didn’t stop with Ni-ki. Soon, Jake was whimpering too, his hands covering his ears as more thunder cracked through the sky. Jungwon was tossing and turning, his face buried in his pillow, clearly disturbed by the storm. Sunoo, already sensitive to loud noises, had crawled into the corner of the bed, shaking with fear.
Jay, still half-asleep, had started kicking his feet in frustration, his face red with tears as he struggled to understand what was happening. And Sunghoon—well, Sunghoon was just wide awake, staring at the window with wide, anxious eyes, unsure whether he should cry or try to be brave.
Heeseung stood in the middle of the room, trying to figure out who to comfort first. “Okay, okay, everyone calm down,” he said, though his voice was drowned out by the combined cries of six terrified toddlers.
He bounced Ni-ki on his hip, patting his back as he tried to shush him. “It’s just a storm, nothing to worry about, alright?”
But Ni-ki’s cries only grew louder as another flash of lightning lit up the sky.
Jake, desperate for comfort, crawled out of his bed and clung to Heeseung’s leg, tears streaming down his cheeks. “Mmmph…!” he mumbled incoherently, trying to say something, but at two years old, the words wouldn’t come out.
“Shh, Jake, it’s okay,” Heeseung whispered, bending down to pick him up too. Now he had two toddlers in his arms, both clinging to him like their lives depended on it.
But it wasn’t enough to calm the room. Jungwon had rolled out of bed in a panic and was crawling towards the door, clearly trying to escape the noise. Sunoo had buried himself even deeper into his blankets, his sobs barely audible as he tried to hide from the storm.
And then there was Jay.
“NO!” Jay yelled, his little fists banging against his pillow in frustration. Heeseung winced as Jay’s tantrum reached new heights. He didn’t know whether Jay was scared of the thunder or just mad at the world for waking him up.
“Jay, please…” Heeseung started, but Jay wasn’t listening.
Sunghoon, the quiet one, had now decided to sit up in bed, his eyes wide as he stared at Heeseung, unsure of what to do. He hadn’t started crying yet, but Heeseung could tell it wouldn’t take much more to push him over the edge.
Heeseung, still holding Ni-ki and Jake, was now sweating from the effort of juggling the two wriggling toddlers. He managed to place them both back into their beds, hoping that maybe they would calm down if he sat next to them.
"Okay, listen," Heeseung said, raising his voice just slightly to get their attention. "It’s just some rain and thunder, okay? Nothing is going to happen, I promise."
But his words were lost amidst the wailing.
As Heeseung tried to comfort Ni-ki and Jake, Sunghoon had climbed out of bed, toddling over to the window. He peered outside, his small hands pressing against the glass as lightning flashed again.
Heeseung’s heart nearly stopped. “Sunghoon, get away from the window!” he called, rushing over to scoop Sunghoon into his arms before he could hurt himself.
In the meantime, Jay had rolled off his bed in his tantrum and was now angrily kicking the floor, his fists still clenched as he let out frustrated cries.
And then there was Jungwon, who had somehow managed to crawl under the bed. His little legs stuck out from underneath, kicking wildly as he tried to escape the noise.
Heeseung stared at the scene in front of him, completely overwhelmed. “What did I do to deserve this?” he muttered under his breath, trying not to laugh at how ridiculous the situation was.
Another loud crack of thunder boomed, and that was when Sunoo finally lost it. His soft, quiet cries turned into loud sobs, his small body trembling as he clung to the edge of his bed.
Seeing Sunoo like that broke Heeseung’s heart. He gently placed Sunghoon back onto his bed and rushed over to Sunoo, scooping him up in his arms.
“Hey, hey, it’s okay, Sunoo,” Heeseung murmured, rocking him gently. “I’ve got you. You’re safe, I promise.”
Sunoo buried his face in Heeseung’s chest, his tiny fists clutching Heeseung’s shirt as if it were a lifeline.
Heeseung sighed, holding Sunoo close as he sat down on the edge of the bed. He looked around the room—Ni-ki and Jake were still whimpering, but they had quieted down a bit now that the storm wasn’t as loud. Jay had finally stopped kicking the floor, but he was still pouting, his face scrunched up in frustration.
Jungwon, meanwhile, had given up on crawling under the bed and had curled into a ball near the door, watching Heeseung with wide, tear-filled eyes.
“Alright, guys,” Heeseung said softly, rubbing Sunoo’s back as he spoke. “It’s just a little storm. We’re going to be okay.”
The storm rumbled on, but slowly, the boys began to settle. Heeseung, still holding Sunoo, managed to coax Jungwon out from his hiding spot, scooping him up with his free arm.
One by one, Heeseung tucked them all back into their beds. Ni-ki still sniffled, but he finally stopped crying. Jake cuddled up to his pillow, his little face still damp with tears. Jay, though still mad at the world, had fallen into a quiet sulk, too tired to keep fighting. Sunghoon stayed close by the window, but this time, Heeseung kept a close eye on him.
Eventually, the boys' cries faded into soft, sleepy murmurs. Heeseung, exhausted but relieved, watched as they finally drifted off to sleep, their tiny bodies still trembling slightly from the storm.
With a tired smile, Heeseung leaned back against the wall, holding both Sunoo and Jungwon in his arms. He had survived another chaotic night.
And as the storm continued outside, Heeseung knew one thing for sure—there would be many more nights like this to come.
