---The afternoon sun lit up the park, casting long shadows over the playground as Heeseung and the six toddlers ran, climbed, and tumbled about in their endless enthusiasm. Since returning from Jeju Island, Heeseung thought a relaxing park day would give everyone a chance to unwind and play freely. They were loud, joyful, and somehow everywhere all at once.
Each of the kids had found their favorite corner: Sunghoon and Ni-ki were zooming down the slide, Jay was “engineering” an intricate sandcastle, Sunoo was engrossed in collecting colorful pebbles, Jake was trying to run with his casted arm, and Jungwon was entranced by a little blue butterfly fluttering around the flowers.
It was all fun and laughs until Heeseung, taking a quick count, felt his stomach twist. “One, two, three, four, five…” He stopped, his heart beginning to race. “Wait… where’s Jungwon?”
His eyes scanned the playground, his pulse quickening as he looked past the slides, the benches, and the jungle gym. A blur of movement near the edge of the playground caught his eye—there was Jungwon, just a few steps away from the street, following the butterfly that was leading him dangerously close to the road.
“JUNGWON!” Heeseung yelled, his voice ringing out in sheer panic.
But Jungwon was so mesmerized by the butterfly that he didn’t hear him. As he took another step, the butterfly darted across the street, and Jungwon stepped forward, reaching for it without realizing the road stretched out right in front of him.
The blaring sound of a car horn suddenly shattered the peace of the park. The driver, seeing Jungwon so close to the street, hit the brakes and honked again, startling Jungwon. His eyes widened, fear taking over as he tripped and fell to the ground just inches from the curb.
Heeseung felt his heart stop. Time seemed to slow as he sprinted toward Jungwon, his heart pounding in his ears. When he finally reached him, Jungwon was lying on the ground, his knees scraped and bleeding, his chin bruised. He looked up at Heeseung, tears welling in his big, scared eyes.
“Oh my god, Jungwon,” Heeseung whispered, scooping him up and clutching him close. He could barely breathe, his hands shaking as he held the little boy, trying to process the fear he’d just felt.
Jungwon’s small hands clung to Heeseung’s shirt, and he burst into tears, burying his face in Heeseung’s chest. “Hyung, it hurts!” he cried, his voice muffled but full of pain.
“I know, Jungwon, I know,” Heeseung murmured, gently rubbing his back, his voice choked with emotion. “I’m here, okay? You’re safe now. I’m here.”
The other five boys, seeing Jungwon in tears, rushed over, their faces mirroring the worry they felt. Sunoo crouched down beside them, his own eyes wet. “Jungwon, does it hurt bad?” he asked softly.
Jungwon nodded, sniffling. “My knees… and my chin,” he whimpered.
Jay knelt down and gently placed his hand on Jungwon’s shoulder. “It’s okay, Jungwon. You’re really strong, like a hero,” he said, trying to comfort his brother.
Sunghoon, in his most serious voice, declared, “Next time, I’ll help you catch the butterfly, Jungwon. No more going near roads, okay?”
Ni-ki, not knowing what else to do, grabbed Heeseung’s arm. “Hyung, will Jungwon be okay?”
Heeseung nodded, though he still felt a lump in his throat. “Yes, he’ll be okay. We’ll get him patched up, don’t worry.” But deep down, he could still feel the weight of what had almost happened, and he didn’t think he’d ever forget it.

Once they were back at the dorm, Heeseung settled Jungwon on the couch, bringing over the first-aid kit. He worked gently, cleaning Jungwon’s scrapes while the others huddled around, watching him with worried expressions.
Jungwon winced as Heeseung dabbed antiseptic on his knees. Sunoo, seeing his brother’s pained expression, rushed to his room and returned with his collection of bright character band-aids. “Here, Jungwon! You can pick any band-aid you want,” he said, holding out the entire box like an offering.
Jungwon’s eyes lit up a little as he carefully chose a band-aid with a cartoon bear on it. Heeseung smiled, gently placing it on his knee, then gave him another big hug, just for good measure.
Jake, who had been watching silently, finally spoke up. “Jungwon, that was really brave of you,” he said, his voice soft. “Butterflies are nice, but next time…maybe we all go together?”
Jungwon sniffled, managing a small nod. “Okay… next time we’ll go together,” he whispered.
---
Seeing that Jungwon was still a little down, the boys banded together for what they dubbed “Operation Cheer Up Jungwon.” They started by creating a massive blanket fort in the living room, draping sheets over every chair and couch, and piling it high with pillows and plushies. Jay insisted on hanging some fairy lights around the fort to make it “extra cozy,” and Ni-ki grabbed a flashlight, ready to create “cool shadow animals” on the fort’s walls.
When it was finished, Heeseung led Jungwon inside, and the other boys quickly surrounded him, each offering something special. Sunoo gave him a juice box, while Sunghoon offered his favorite toy truck, and Jake offered to let him be “King of the Fort.”
Jay even brought over his most cherished teddy bear, shyly placing it in Jungwon’s lap. “Here, Jungwon. This is Mr. Snuggles… he’s good at making people feel better,” Jay whispered, looking a bit embarrassed.
Jungwon looked around at his brothers, his eyes beginning to sparkle again. “Thank you, everyone,” he whispered, hugging the teddy bear tightly.
The boys took turns sharing stories, making funny faces, and doing silly impressions to make Jungwon laugh, and eventually, they succeeded. Laughter echoed from the fort as they all played together, and soon Jungwon was smiling, the fear of the day’s events fading as he realized how loved and safe he was.
---
As bedtime rolled around, Heeseung tucked each of the boys into their beds, but he lingered a little longer with Jungwon, sitting on the edge of his bed and running a hand through his hair.
“Hyung?” Jungwon whispered, looking up at him.
“Yes, Jungwon?”
“Thank you for saving me today. I was… really scared.”
Heeseung’s chest tightened, and he gently pulled Jungwon into another hug. “I’ll always be here for you, Jungwon. You’re my little brother, and I love you. I’ll keep you safe, always.”
Jungwon hugged him back tightly, his voice a soft murmur. “I love you too, hyung.”
Heeseung gave him one last pat before tucking him in, watching as Jungwon closed his eyes, a peaceful smile on his face as he drifted off to sleep, comforted by the warmth of his family.
And as Heeseung left the room, he felt a newfound sense of gratitude—for each of the six boys he’d been entrusted with and for the love and joy they brought to each day.
