The sun was setting as Elsa paced in her private chambers, hands clenched tight at her sides. The coronation was fast approaching, and the thought of standing before the entire kingdom, taking the oath as queen, made her stomach twist in knots. It wasn't the responsibility she feared; it was the possibility that her powers, the ice she had fought so hard to suppress, might betray her in front of everyone. The thought haunted her. She glanced at her gloved hands, remembering the last time her powers had slipped—a moment of fear that had sent snowflakes spiraling from her fingertips. She shuddered at the memory.
Rapunzel knocked lightly on the door before stepping inside. "Elsa?" Her voice was soft, filled with concern. "I've been looking for you. I thought we could spend some time together before the coronation tomorrow."
Elsa stiffened but forced a smile as she turned to face her cousin. "I'm just... preparing. You know, royal duties and all."
Rapunzel crossed the room, her golden hair trailing behind her like a river of light. "I can imagine it's overwhelming," she said gently. "I mean, I was overwhelmed just becoming a princess, and I had Eugene with me the whole time. You're doing this alone."
Elsa's smile faltered, and for a moment, Rapunzel thought she saw a flicker of pain in her cousin's eyes. But Elsa quickly composed herself, brushing it off with practiced grace. "I'll be fine. It's just... a lot to take in."
Rapunzel wasn't convinced, but she didn't press the issue. Instead, she sat on the edge of the bed, watching Elsa as she moved to the window, staring out at the snow-covered mountains beyond. "I know we haven't seen each other in years, but I want you to know I'm here for you," Rapunzel said quietly. "If you ever need to talk... about anything."
Elsa's shoulders tensed. She appreciated the sentiment, but there were things she couldn't share—things Rapunzel wouldn't understand. She had been alone with her powers for so long, hiding her true self even from Anna. How could she possibly open up now? Especially with tomorrow looming over her like a storm cloud.
"Thank you," Elsa replied, her voice distant. "But really, I'm fine. Just... tired."
Rapunzel watched her cousin closely, sensing the walls Elsa had built around herself. She wanted to help, but she didn't know how. Instead, she rose from the bed and crossed the room to stand beside Elsa. "I'm glad we're here," she said, hoping to break through some of Elsa's barriers. "It's been too long since we've seen each other. I missed you."
Elsa's expression softened, and for a brief moment, her guard dropped. "I missed you too," she admitted quietly. "But things are... different now. I'm different."
Rapunzel frowned, not fully understanding. "Different how?"
Elsa hesitated, her gaze fixed on the horizon. "I... I just have more responsibilities now. Being queen means I can't—" She stopped herself before she could say too much. "I can't always do what I want."
Rapunzel nodded slowly, sensing there was more to the story but respecting Elsa's privacy. "Well, if you ever need help with those responsibilities, I'm here. I've had my fair share of royal duties too."
Elsa gave a small, appreciative smile, though it didn't reach her eyes. "Thank you, Rapunzel. I'll keep that in mind."
They stood in silence for a few moments longer, the tension between them unspoken but palpable. Rapunzel could feel Elsa retreating back into herself, and she didn't want to push too hard. But she made a silent promise to herself that she would be there for Elsa, no matter what. Even if Elsa wasn't ready to let her in yet.
As Rapunzel left the room, closing the door softly behind her, Elsa exhaled a shaky breath. She moved to the center of the room, staring at her hands again. Carefully, she pulled off her gloves, revealing her pale fingers. For a moment, she stood still, her heart racing as she focused on keeping her emotions in check. But the anxiety gnawing at her was too strong, and with a flick of her wrist, a small flurry of snowflakes escaped her fingertips, swirling through the air before disappearing into the cold.
Elsa's chest tightened. How was she going to get through tomorrow without losing control?
