The tension in the castle only grew thicker as the days passed. Rapunzel and Eugene continued their quiet investigation, but each day that passed felt like another step closer to Hans seizing control. They knew they had to act quickly before Anna made a decision that couldn't be undone. Meanwhile, Elsa's absences became more frequent and prolonged. Every time Rapunzel tried to check on her cousin, she was either told that Elsa was attending to royal matters or away from the castle altogether.
Rapunzel could sense that something was coming—something bigger than they realized. It wasn't just Hans and his secret agenda. The storm Elsa had mentioned days before hadn't arrived, but the air was heavy with an impending sense of doom.
One morning, Rapunzel finally managed to catch Elsa just before she left the castle again. Elsa looked exhausted, her usually pristine appearance somewhat disheveled, and her eyes holding a haunted look.
"Elsa, please. You've been avoiding me for days now," Rapunzel said, stepping in front of her cousin to block her path. "What's going on? You can't keep running away."
Elsa hesitated, glancing at the guards waiting by the gates. With a heavy sigh, she gestured for them to leave and turned to Rapunzel, her expression pained. "I'm not running, Rapunzel. I'm trying to protect everyone."
"Protect everyone from what?" Rapunzel asked, her frustration mounting. "From yourself? You don't have to do that. You can't keep handling this alone, Elsa. Let me help you."
Elsa closed her eyes, her gloved hands clenching into fists. "You don't understand. If I lose control... if my powers get out of hand... I could hurt everyone in Arendelle. I could freeze the entire kingdom."
Rapunzel took a deep breath, stepping closer to her cousin. "You're stronger than you think, Elsa. And you're not alone. You have me, and you have Anna. We can help you control your powers. But shutting everyone out—pushing us away—isn't the answer."
Elsa shook her head, her voice trembling. "I've tried controlling it my whole life. But the more I try to hold it in, the harder it gets. The stress of being queen, the pressure of ruling this kingdom—it's too much. I can't handle it."
Rapunzel gently placed her hands on Elsa's shoulders, forcing her to meet her gaze. "You don't have to handle it alone. You're not just Arendelle's queen—you're my cousin, and you're Anna's sister. We're here for you."
For a moment, Elsa looked like she might break. Her icy composure cracked, and her eyes filled with unshed tears. But just as quickly as the vulnerability appeared, Elsa retreated behind her walls again. She pulled away from Rapunzel's grasp, her face hardening.
"I can't risk it," she said quietly. "Please, Rapunzel, just let me go."
Before Rapunzel could argue, Elsa turned and hurried out of the castle, leaving her cousin standing in the hallway, feeling more helpless than ever.
