The next morning, the sun barely peeked over the horizon, casting a pale light over the kingdom of Arendelle. Inside the castle, the atmosphere was much darker. Rapunzel had spent the night tossing and turning, her thoughts a chaotic swirl of concerns about Elsa's powers and Anna's dangerous infatuation with Hans. She felt as if both her cousins were slipping away from her, each in their own way.
Eugene, sensing her unrest, found her in the royal gardens after breakfast. The roses were in full bloom, their vibrant petals a stark contrast to the gloom that clouded Rapunzel's mind. He approached her gently, placing a hand on her shoulder. "You didn't sleep, did you?"
Rapunzel shook her head, not bothering to hide her exhaustion. "I tried, but I couldn't stop thinking about Elsa. And Anna. It's like everything's falling apart, and I don't know how to fix it."
Eugene let out a sympathetic sigh, pulling her into a hug. "You're doing everything you can, Blondie. But you can't control everything. Anna's a grown woman, and so is Elsa. You've got to let them make their own choices, even if it's hard to watch."
Rapunzel pulled back slightly, frowning up at him. "But what if their choices hurt them? Anna's rushing into a relationship with Hans, and Elsa... she's terrified of herself. How am I supposed to just stand by and let that happen?"
Eugene met her gaze seriously. "You don't have to stand by and do nothing, but you also can't force them to see things your way. Maybe all you can do is be there for them when they're ready to listen."
Rapunzel sighed, leaning her head against his shoulder. "I just wish I knew what to do."
They stood in silence for a few moments, the gentle rustle of the garden's trees the only sound between them. Then, from the corner of her eye, Rapunzel saw movement near the palace entrance. It was Elsa, walking quickly toward the gates with her cloak pulled tightly around her. She wasn't alone—there was a small group of guards trailing her, but her posture was tense, her steps hurried.
"Elsa?" Rapunzel called, stepping forward.
Elsa glanced back, her eyes wide with surprise before she quickly schooled her expression. "Rapunzel. I'm just... I need to check on the northern borders. There's been a report of a potential storm heading our way."
Rapunzel frowned. "A storm? This time of year?"
Elsa hesitated, avoiding her cousin's gaze. "It's nothing to worry about. I just need to... make sure everything's under control."
Rapunzel took a step closer, concern etching itself deeper into her face. "Are you sure it's just a storm? Elsa, you've been avoiding me ever since we talked about your powers. You don't have to face this alone. Let me help you."
Elsa's lips thinned, and for a brief moment, Rapunzel saw the flicker of fear in her cousin's eyes. But it was gone as quickly as it came. "I appreciate it, Rapunzel. But I need to handle this. Alone."
Rapunzel reached out, but Elsa stepped back, shaking her head. "I'll be fine," she said firmly before turning and continuing her hurried walk toward the gates.
Rapunzel watched her go, her heart sinking. Elsa's walls were back up, stronger than ever. And the way she had avoided eye contact made Rapunzel even more suspicious. Something wasn't right, but Elsa was shutting her out, retreating into her fear once again.
Eugene came up beside her, his expression grim. "She's running, isn't she?"
Rapunzel nodded slowly. "She is. But from what?"
