VIVIENNE STOOD AT HER LOCKER, heart pounding in her chest as she rummaged through her books. the memories of the last time madeline had been at at school still stung. madeline had sabotaged her friendship with matt, twisting words and sowing seeds of doubt. the scars of betrayal were still fresh, and the thought of facing her again made vivienne's stomach churn.
"did you hear? madeline's back!" hope leaned against the locker next to vivienne, her expression tense. "what do you think she wants?"
vivienne slammed her locker shut, the metallic clang echoing through the corridor. "i don't care what she wants. she ruined things for me once, she won't get a chance to do it again."
as the bell rang, students spilled into classrooms, but vivienne remained rooted in place, her eyes scanning the hall for signs of madeline. when she finally spotted her, a knot of dread twisted in her stomach. madeline strode down the hall, confidence radiating from her like an electric current. dressed impeccably and sporting a flawless smile, she seemed to bask in the attention of her peers.
