Adeline

I stood before them, trying to fake confidence, but my nerves were doing the cha cha slide. Every eye in the room was on me, and I felt like a lab rat under a microscope.

My gaze darted to Eryx, the only face I knew. We locked eyes, and for a moment, I thought we shared a secret understanding. But then, he just stared, and I wondered if I'd imagined it.

Come on, Eryx, do something! I mentally pleaded. Break this awkwardness!

As if on cue, Eryx rose from his chair and approached me. "Adeline, right on time," he said with a warm smile.

His father boomed from the head of the table, "Glad you could join us, Adeline!"

"Pleasure," I replied, trying to sound casual, as Eryx guided me to the chair beside him. He pulled it back, and I sat, wondering if this gentleman act was genuine.

I adjusted myself, meeting the room's collective gaze. Ugh, why was everyone staring? Was I wearing a 'kick me' sign? I glanced at Eryx, hoping he'd rescue me.

But he looked just as lost. Then, something clicked, and he stood up, our eyes locking. Without a word, I followed his lead and rose.

I stood beside Eryx, my heart racing as he rose from his seat. His commanding presence was intimidating, but I knew this was his domain.

"Everyone, I'd like you to meet Adeline," he announced, his deep voice sending shivers down my spine. "My girlfriend."

I felt a flutter in my chest. It was surreal hearing him claim me publicly.

Eryx's gaze swept the room, his eyes locking onto each family member. "Until now, we've kept our relationship private. I'd appreciate it if we could maintain that discretion moving forward."

The underlying message was clear: don't spill the beans. I sensed a hint of warning in his tone.

As he wrapped his fingers around mine, a jolt of electricity ran through me.

"I trust you'll all make her feel welcome," he added, his eyes never leaving mine.

I met his gaze, my heart skipping a beat.

We took our seats at the grand dining table.

"Adeline, you know my father, Kaelin, and my brother, Asher," he said, nodding toward them.

I smiled warmly at Kaelin's authoritative presence and Asher's lively grin.

"Over here, we have my Aunt Susan and Uncle David," Eryx continued, gesturing across the table.

Aunt Susan's face lit up with a genuine smile. "Adeline, dear, it's lovely to meet you!" She reached out to pat my hand.

Uncle David's firm nod acknowledged me.

"And this is Liam, my cousin," Eryx said, as Liam leaned back in his chair, a friendly smile on his face.

Aunt Susan leaned forward, her eyes sparkling. "Tell me, Adeline, where's your family from?"

"Riverview Heights," I replied.

"And what do your parents do?" Aunt Susan asked.

"My mom's a retired teacher and artist, while my dad's a retired accountant and consultant," I explained.

Eryx's gaze flicked to mine, his expression neutral.

Aunt Susan's interest deepened. "That's wonderful! Do you have siblings?"

"I have an older sister, Emily," I said. "She's married and lives in Oakwood Hills. She's a Pediatrician."

Uncle David nodded thoughtfully. "A Pediatrician, that's admirable."
