Emilia arrived at Hastings & Co. early on her first day, eager to make a good impression. The bright, open lobby buzzed with the energy of ambitious interns and seasoned professionals, but all she could think about was how to stand out. The large clock on the wall ticked away the seconds, each one amplifying her anxiety.

She checked her reflection in the glass doors, smoothing her feathers and adjusting her blazer. Professional, competent, unfazed—that was the persona she needed to project. As she stepped further inside, she spotted a group of interns clustered near the elevator, chatting and laughing. Their excitement made her both hopeful and nervous.

"Are you ready for the orientation?" a voice interrupted her thoughts.

Emilia turned to find a tall guy with messy feathers and a bright smile. "Yeah! I mean, sort of. Just trying not to trip over my own feet," she admitted, forcing a smile.

"I'm Nate," he introduced himself, extending a hand. "Don't worry; we all feel like that on the first day. Just don't let Adrian scare you. He thinks he owns the place."

Her heart dropped. **Adrian.** She hadn't thought about how they would both be here. "Adrian Carter?" she asked, attempting to keep her tone casual.

Nate nodded, amusement dancing in his eyes. "Yeah, the guy's a legend around here—mostly for being insufferable. But don't let him get to you. He's just trying to prove he's better than everyone else. Which, you know, he isn't."

Before she could respond, the elevator doors opened with a soft ding, and out stepped Adrian, wearing a tailored suit that looked like it was made for him. He exuded confidence, and the way he scanned the lobby made it clear that he was in his element.

"Great," Emilia muttered under her breath. "Just what I need."

"Just remember, ignore him," Nate said, flashing a reassuring smile. "He can't bite you if you don't let him."

Adrian's gaze landed on her, and a smirk curled his lips as he approached. "Look who it is—Emilia Rivers, the overachiever," he said, his tone dripping with mockery. "I was hoping you wouldn't make it to orientation. Now I have to put up with you all summer."

Emilia felt heat creep up her neck. "You'll have to try harder than that to get rid of me, Carter," she shot back, crossing her arms defiantly.

"Such fire! I hope it lasts," he replied, a glimmer of something in his eyes that made her stomach flip. "You'll need it to survive here."

Nate cleared his throat, clearly uncomfortable with the tension. "Let's just focus on the orientation, yeah? Maybe we'll learn how to survive without Adrian's expert guidance."

Adrian laughed, a genuine sound that took Emilia by surprise. "Good luck with that," he said, before striding toward the conference room, leaving her feeling both infuriated and intrigued.

As the orientation began, Emilia tried to pay attention to the HR manager's speech about company values and expectations. But all she could think about was the challenge Adrian presented. He was infuriating, sure, but there was something about him that drew her in. The way he carried himself, the confidence he exuded—she couldn't shake the feeling that there was more to him than met the eye.

"Welcome to Hastings & Co.," the HR manager said, snapping Emilia back to reality. "We're thrilled to have you all here this summer. We expect nothing but excellence. Remember, you're competing for a full-time position, so make your mark."

Emilia felt a jolt of adrenaline. This was what she had worked for. No distractions, no rivalries—just her and her ambition. But every time she stole a glance at Adrian, sitting across the room with an air of nonchalance, her resolve wavered.

After the orientation, as interns filtered out of the conference room, Emilia lingered, determined to ask questions about her upcoming assignments. But just as she was about to approach the HR manager, Adrian cut in front of her.

"Do you even know how to make coffee?" he teased, leaning casually against the wall.

Emilia narrowed her eyes. "I'm not here to make coffee, Adrian. I'm here to do real work."

"Good luck with that. You'll need more than just ambition to keep up with me," he shot back, his tone light, but there was an underlying challenge in his words.

She took a deep breath, reminding herself that she had come too far to let him get under her skin. "I've faced tougher challenges than you, Carter. Trust me."

"Is that a challenge?" His smirk deepened, and her heart raced.

"No, it's a warning," she replied, pushing past him, feeling the heat of his gaze on her back.

As she walked away, determination surged within her. She wouldn't let Adrian Carter stand in her way. This summer was her chance to shine, and she would show him—and everyone else—what she was capable of.

But as the days passed, she couldn't shake the feeling that this summer would change everything, challenging her not just professionally but personally. The line between rivalry and something more blurred with every interaction, and Emilia found herself drawn into a game she never intended to play.
