The days following Daniel's death blurred together in a haze of fear and confusion. Emilia barely slept, her mind consumed by questions and dread. Every creak in the cabin, every rustle of the trees outside, made her jump. The police investigation continued, but no new leads had emerged, leaving the entire town on edge.

Adrian, true to his word, had installed makeshift security measures around the cabin—extra locks on the doors and windows, motion sensors, even a few cameras he had bought from a hardware store in town. But despite his reassurances, Emilia couldn't shake the feeling that something was terribly wrong.

One evening, as the sun began to dip behind the trees, casting long shadows across the cabin's porch, Emilia stood at the window, staring out at the darkening woods. She had been trying to call Lucy, but her friend hadn't answered all day. It wasn't like her to go silent, especially not now, with everything going on. A knot of anxiety tightened in Emilia's chest.

Adrian was in the living room, sifting through old photographs they had taken during happier times. She could hear him flipping through the pictures, a soft rustling that barely broke the oppressive silence of the cabin. The atmosphere felt suffocating.

She glanced down at her phone again, but still no response from Lucy. Finally, unable to take it anymore, she turned to Adrian. "Something feels off. Lucy hasn't answered any of my calls or texts all day. I'm worried."

Adrian looked up from the photos, his brow furrowed. "Maybe she's just busy. People in town are probably panicking right now. Everyone's on edge."

"I know, but she's never ignored me like this," Emilia insisted. "I think something's wrong."

He put the photos down and stood up, crossing the room to stand beside her at the window. "Do you want to drive into town? Check on her?"

Emilia hesitated. The idea of leaving the relative safety of the cabin made her uneasy, but so did the thought of Lucy being in danger. "Yeah. I think we should."

Adrian nodded, grabbing his keys. "Let's go, then. We'll check in with her, make sure she's okay."

The drive into town was tense, the silence between them thick with unspoken fears. As they neared Lucy's house, Emilia's phone buzzed with a new text. She grabbed it quickly, hoping it was from her friend, but her stomach dropped when she saw an unknown number instead.

**"Stop asking questions. You won't like the answers."**

Her breath caught in her throat, and her hands shook as she showed the message to Adrian. His face darkened, his grip tightening on the steering wheel.

"Who the hell is that?" Adrian asked, his voice low and dangerous.

"I don't know," Emilia whispered, her heart racing. "What if this is connected to Daniel? What if we're being watched?"

Adrian's jaw clenched. "We're not letting them scare us. We'll find out what's going on."

When they pulled up to Lucy's house, it was eerily quiet. The lights were off, and her car was parked in the driveway, but there was no sign of her. Emilia's unease deepened as they approached the front door and knocked. No answer.

"Lucy?" Emilia called, knocking harder. "Lucy, it's me!"

Still nothing. Adrian tried the door, but it was locked. He peered through the windows, but the inside of the house was dark.

"We should check around the back," he suggested, his voice tense.

They circled the house, their footsteps crunching against the gravel, and when they reached the backyard, Emilia's heart skipped a beat. The back door was ajar, swaying slightly in the evening breeze.

Adrian moved ahead, stepping cautiously inside. "Lucy?" he called out, his voice echoing in the silence.

Emilia followed, her heart pounding. The house felt cold and empty, the air thick with an unsettling stillness. As they made their way through the kitchen and into the living room, Emilia's eyes landed on something that made her blood run cold—a shattered picture frame on the floor. The photograph inside was one of Lucy and Emilia, taken years ago during a summer festival. The glass was splintered, and the frame looked as if it had been thrown.

"Adrian..." Emilia whispered, her voice shaky. "Something's really wrong."

Suddenly, the sound of footsteps upstairs made them both freeze. Someone was in the house.

Adrian motioned for Emilia to stay behind him as they crept toward the staircase. The tension was palpable, every creak of the floorboards sending shivers down Emilia's spine. They climbed the stairs slowly, their breaths shallow, until they reached the second floor.

The door to Lucy's bedroom was slightly open, and dim light spilled out into the hallway. Adrian pushed the door open with his foot, revealing the disarray inside. Drawers were pulled out, clothes were strewn across the floor, and the room looked ransacked. But there was no sign of Lucy.

"What the hell happened here?" Adrian muttered, his eyes scanning the room.

Emilia stepped forward, her heart pounding in her chest. "Lucy wouldn't just leave her house like this. She's in trouble, Adrian."

As they moved further into the room, Emilia noticed something odd. On Lucy's bed, in the midst of the mess, lay a folded piece of paper. Her stomach twisted as she reached for it, her hands shaking. She unfolded the paper and read the message scrawled in hurried, almost frantic handwriting:

**"They know. You need to leave."**

Emilia's breath caught in her throat as she read the note over and over, trying to make sense of it. "They know? What does that mean?"

Adrian's face was set in a hard line. "It means we're being targeted. Whoever was after Daniel is coming for us too."

Panic clawed at Emilia's chest. "But why? What did we do?"

"We need to get out of here," Adrian said urgently. "Now."

Just as he spoke, the sound of a car pulling up outside made them both tense. They rushed to the window and saw a black SUV idling at the curb. The headlights illumiDanield the darkened street, and Emilia's heart dropped as the driver's side door opened.

A figure stepped out—tall, wearing a hood, and moving with purpose toward the front door.

"Adrian," Emilia whispered, her voice barely audible. "They're here."

Adrian grabbed her hand, pulling her away from the window. "We need to go. Now."

They rushed down the stairs, adrenaline pumping through their veins. Emilia's mind raced as she tried to comprehend what was happening. Who was after them? Why was Daniel involved in something so dangerous? And why was Lucy now missing?

As they slipped out through the back door, they kept low, staying out of sight. Adrian's car was parked a few houses down, and they made a beeline for it, their footsteps quick but quiet.

Just as they reached the car, Emilia glanced over her shoulder and saw the hooded figure standing in front of Lucy's house, staring directly at them. Her blood ran cold, and for a brief moment, their eyes locked.

Whoever it was, they knew.

Adrian yanked the car door open, and they scrambled inside. He started the engine and peeled away from the curb, his eyes darting to the rearview mirror.

"We're not safe here anymore," he said, his voice tight with urgency. "We need to figure out what's going on before they find us."

Emilia nodded, her mind spinning with fear and confusion. "But where do we even start? Everything is falling apart, Adrian. Daniel's dead, Lucy's missing, and now we're being hunted."

Adrian's grip on the steering wheel tightened. "We'll start by finding out the truth. Whatever Daniel was involved in, we're caught in the middle of it now."

As they sped down the empty road, the darkness of the night seemed to close in around them. The shadows loomed large, and Emilia couldn't shake the feeling that they were being watched.
