The words echoed in Emilia's mind: He was one of them.

It didn't make sense. Daniel, her ex, had been part of the organization that was hunting them down. Her legs felt weak, and she had to steady herself on a nearby stack of old crates.

"No," Emilia whispered, shaking her head. "He couldn't have been."

Adrian stood frozen, the photo of Daniel and Marcus Hale still clenched in his hand, his knuckles white with tension. His face was unreadable, but the coldness in his eyes told Emilia he believed it. He had already come to terms with the betrayal she was struggling to comprehend.

Jason, sitting on a nearby chair to catch his breath, looked equally devastated, though he didn't seem surprised. "I suspected for a while," he said, his voice low. "Daniel had changed over the last few months. He wasn't telling me everything. I thought he was just being cautious, but now..."

"But if he was one of them, why did they kill him?" Emilia's voice rose as she tried to understand. "Why would they go after him if he was working with them?"

Adrian flipped through the notes, scanning page after page. "Maybe he turned on them. Or maybe they found out he was working both sides." He sighed heavily, setting the papers down. "We don't know how deep this goes. We can't trust anything anymore."

Emilia's head spun. The people chasing them had always been faceless, monsters lurking in the shadows, but now they had names, and Daniel had been a part of it. A part of the conspiracy that had destroyed everything. She felt sick, her stomach twisting in knots. If Daniel had been part of the enemy all along, what else had he kept from them? What other dangers were they walking into without knowing?

Lucy, who had been uncharacteristically silent since they entered the storage unit, finally spoke up, her voice shaking. "What if Daniel was trying to protect us? What if he... changed his mind? Maybe he didn't want to be part of them anymore, and that's why they killed him."

Adrian let out a harsh breath, his expression dark. "Maybe. Or maybe he was just using us the entire time."

The words cut deep, and Emilia flinched. It was hard to imagine that everything they'd been through with Daniel had been a lie. She didn't want to believe it, couldn't believe it. But the evidence was right there in front of them—Daniel standing next to Marcus Hale, the man responsible for all of this.

Jason struggled to his feet, grimacing in pain as he moved toward the open safe. "Either way, it doesn't matter now. We have to figure out what Daniel was hiding in these notes, and fast. The fact that we're still alive means we have something they want."

Emilia swallowed, her throat dry. "What do we do?"

Adrian ran a hand through his feathers, his jaw tight. "We need to decipher these documents. There has to be something here—some clue about what Marcus Hale is after. Daniel wouldn't have gone to all this trouble to hide these if they weren't important."

Lucy glanced nervously at the door. "We don't have much time. What if those guys come back? Or worse, what if Marcus finds us?"

"We'll be ready," Adrian said, his voice cold and decisive. "But first, we have to know what we're dealing with."

They spread the documents out on a nearby table, their eyes scanning the maps, notes, and photographs for anything that might make sense. Emilia's hands trembled as she sifted through the papers, each one more cryptic than the last. Daniel's handwriting was scrawled across some of the pages, but most of the information was encrypted—codes and symbols that made no sense to her.

"Here," Jason muttered, pulling a sheet from the pile. "This map... I think it's showing us where the organization's main base is. Or at least one of their locations."

Adrian leaned over to study the map. "If this is accurate, it's a few hours from here, deep in the woods. Secluded, just like the storage unit. But there's something else..."

Emilia frowned. "What?"

Adrian pointed to a small mark on the edge of the map. "This symbol—it's the same one that's been on every piece of correspondence we've found. It's their insignia."

Lucy stared at the map in horror. "You're not suggesting we go there, are you? That's insane. We'd be walking right into their hands."

"We don't have a choice," Adrian replied, his voice hard. "If we don't figure this out, we're dead anyway. This might be the only way to get answers."

Emilia's heart raced. "But how do we know it's not a trap? Daniel could have planted this to lead us straight to them."

Jason winced, his face pale. "We don't. But we don't have any other leads. If we don't act soon, they'll find us first."

Lucy shook her head, panic setting in. "This is madness. We're not equipped for this—we don't even know what we're up against!"

Adrian's eyes darkened. "You're right. We don't know. But sitting around waiting for them to come to us isn't an option."

The room fell silent, the weight of the decision pressing down on them all. Emilia could feel the gravity of it, the fear that had been gnawing at her since Daniel's death now morphing into something darker, more dangerous. They were at a crossroads—either they fought back, or they waited to be hunted down.

"I'm in," Emilia said quietly, surprising even herself with the firmness in her voice. She wasn't sure when the fear had transformed into determination, but she knew one thing for certain: she couldn't let Daniel's death be for nothing. Whatever secrets he had kept, whatever betrayal lay beneath the surface, she needed to know the truth.

Adrian nodded, his gaze lingering on her for a moment, a flicker of something like respect passing between them. "Good. We leave tonight."

Lucy let out a shaky breath, her eyes wide with fear. "You're all crazy. This is suicide."

"Maybe," Jason muttered, his voice rough with pain and exhaustion. "But we're already in too deep."

As they packed up the documents and prepared for the next leg of their journey, Emilia couldn't shake the feeling that they were heading toward something far more dangerous than they had imagined. Daniel's secrets had already cost him his life—and now, they were walking straight into the lion's den.

But there was no turning back now. Not with Marcus Hale lurking in the shadows, not with the truth so close she could almost taste it.

Whatever was waiting for them at the end of this road, they would face it together—or die trying.
