The weeks rolled into a blur of study sessions, shared laughter, and late-night phone calls. Emilia and Adrian continued to grow closer, their connection deepening with each passing day. As the end of the semester approached, they felt confident in their ability to juggle their relationship and their burgeoning careers.

However, just as they began to settle into their routine, the unexpected happened. One Wednesday afternoon, as Emilia was leaving her last class of the day, she spotted a familiar figure leaning against the wall near the exit.

Her heart skipped a beat as she recognized Daniel—her high school ex-boyfriend. He had been a whirlwind of charm and chaos in her life, leaving behind a mixture of fond memories and lingering heartbreak. After their messy breakup, she had never expected to see him again, let alone on her campus.

"Daniel?" she called out, her voice barely above a whisper as she approached him.

He looked up, a grin spreading across his face, and pushed off the wall to walk towards her. "Emilia! It's been a while! How have you been?"

Her mind raced as she forced a smile, trying to mask the surprise that swirled within her. "I've been good! Just busy with classes and life, you know?"

"Yeah, I get that," he said, running a hand through his tousled feathers. "I'm actually here for a summer program. Thought I'd check out some schools and see what's happening."

Emilia's heart sank at the realization that he would be around. "Oh, that's great! I hope you find what you're looking for."

Daniel leaned in slightly, his eyes sparkling with mischief. "You look amazing, by the way. I've missed seeing you around."

"Thanks, Daniel," she replied cautiously. "It's good to see you too."

Just then, Adrian emerged from the building, his laughter carrying through the air as he spotted Emilia. The laughter died in his throat when he noticed the interaction between her and Daniel. A flicker of concern crossed his face, but he quickly masked it with a smile.

"Hey, Em! Ready to head to the café?" he called out, then paused as he saw Daniel standing next to her. "Uh, hi. I'm Adrian."

"Nice to meet you, man. I'm Daniel," he replied, extending a hand. "Emilia and I go way back."

Adrian hesitated for a moment before shaking Daniel's hand, his expression shifting subtly. "Yeah, I gathered that."

Daniel's grin widened, clearly enjoying the moment. "Emilia was just telling me about her busy schedule. Sounds like she's really thriving here."

"She is," Adrian said, his tone measured. "We've been studying together a lot."

Emilia felt the tension in the air thicken, the awkwardness palpable. "Actually, we were just about to grab coffee. Would you like to join us?" she offered, trying to ease the tension.

Daniel's eyes sparkled with intrigue. "Sure, why not? I'd love to catch up with you both!"

As they walked toward the café, Emilia could feel Adrian's tension beside her, the muscles in his jaw clenched. She glanced over at him, wanting to reassure him, but he seemed lost in thought, his gaze fixed straight ahead.

Once they reached the café, they found a small table in the corner, and Emilia sat between the two of them, keenly aware of the dynamic. Daniel launched into stories about his time away, recounting wild adventures and exaggerated anecdotes that had Adrian's brow furrowing slightly.

"So, what's your major?" Daniel asked, turning his attention to Adrian.

"Law," Adrian replied, his tone curt. "I'm hoping to specialize in environmental law."
