The car's engine roared to life, cutting through the oppressive silence of the forest. Adrian gripped the steering wheel with white knuckles, his jaw set in grim determination. Emilia sat in the passenger seat, her eyes glued to the rearview mirror, half expecting to see shadowy figures lurking just beyond the trees. In the backseat, Lucy was curled up, still pale and trembling, her fingers clutching her knees as if holding herself together.

The road ahead was long, winding through the dense forest and leading into a darkness that felt deeper than the night itself. None of them had spoken since leaving the cabin. The weight of what they were running from—what they didn't yet fully understand—pressed down on them, making every second feel like a countdown to something terrible.

Emilia broke the silence first. "Do you think Jason will actually help us?" Her voice was barely above a whisper, but in the stillness of the car, it sounded unnaturally loud.

Adrian didn't take his eyes off the road. "We don't know, but it's the only lead we have. He was close to Daniel once, maybe he'll know why this is happening."

Lucy let out a shaky breath. "He'll help us. He has to. Jason knew things—things Daniel wouldn't tell anyone else. He was always in deeper than he let on."

Emilia's stomach turned. She'd always sensed there was more to Daniel than met the eye, but she had never imagined it could be something this dark. Whatever Daniel had gotten himself involved in, it had gotten him killed. And now it was closing in on all of them.

They drove in tense silence for what felt like hours, the night stretching on endlessly. The trees blurred into a dark mass outside the windows, and the narrow road seemed to twist and turn with no end in sight.

Finally, Adrian spoke, his voice low and steady. "We're getting close. If Jason's still in the area, we should find him soon."

Lucy sat up, her eyes wide with anxiety. "We need to be careful. Jason isn't exactly the trusting type. If he thinks we're bringing trouble, he might not help us."

Adrian nodded, but his expression was unreadable. Emilia couldn't help but feel a pit of dread forming in her stomach. They were putting all their hopes on a man they barely knew, and they had no idea if he was even alive, let alone willing to help them.

After another hour of driving, they finally reached the small town Lucy had mentioned. It was barely more than a collection of rundown buildings and dimly lit streets, tucked away in a forgotten corner of the world. The kind of place people went to disappear.

Adrian pulled the car into the parking lot of an old, weathered diner at the edge of town. The neon sign flickered weakly, casting a sickly glow over the cracked pavement. They sat in the car for a moment, none of them speaking.

"This is it," Adrian said quietly. "Lucy, do you know where Jason might be?"

Lucy nodded, though she looked hesitant. "He used to live just outside of town, in a trailer by the woods. If he's still here, that's where he'll be."

Emilia's nerves were fraying. "And what if he's not? What if they got to him first?"

Lucy's eyes flickered with fear. "We'll deal with that when we get there."

Without another word, they got out of the car, the cool night air biting at their skin. The town was eerily quiet, the streets empty, as if the people here had learned to stay out of sight when the darkness fell. Emilia shivered, pulling her jacket tighter around herself as they began walking toward the woods.

The further they went from the town, the darker it became. The trees loomed overhead like silent sentinels, their branches swaying in the breeze. The path they were following was narrow and overgrown, almost as if it hadn't been used in a long time.

Lucy led the way, her steps uncertain but determined. "It's just up ahead," she whispered, glancing over her shoulder. "We should be able to see it soon."

As they walked, Emilia's mind raced with questions. Who were these people after them? What had Daniel gotten himself involved in? And how far would these people go to silence anyone who knew too much?

After what felt like an eternity, they reached a clearing. In the center of it stood an old, rusted trailer, its windows dark and its door slightly ajar. Emilia's heart sank. Something didn't feel right.

Adrian held up a hand, motioning for them to stay back. "Wait here," he whispered, his voice barely audible. He stepped forward, moving cautiously toward the trailer, his flashlight pointed at the ground.

Emilia held her breath, her eyes locked on Adrian as he approached the door. He paused for a moment, listening, then slowly pushed the door open with the toe of his boot. The creak of the hinges echoed through the clearing, setting Emilia's teeth on edge.

Adrian disappeared inside the trailer, leaving Emilia and Lucy standing in the clearing, hearts pounding in their chests.

Minutes passed, though they felt like hours. The night was deathly quiet, and the longer Adrian was inside, the more Emilia's anxiety grew.

Finally, Adrian reappeared in the doorway, his face grim. "It's empty. No sign of Jason."

Lucy's face fell. "No... he has to be here. Maybe he's hiding. Maybe he—"

"There's something else," Adrian interrupted, his voice low and tense. "There's blood."

Emilia's breath caught in her throat. "What? Where?"

"On the floor," Adrian said, his eyes hard. "It's fresh."

A cold chill ran down Emilia's spine. *Jason.* Had they been too late? Had the people who killed Daniel already found Jason, too?

Lucy stepped forward, her voice shaking. "He could still be alive. Maybe he escaped. We have to find him."

Adrian didn't look convinced, but he didn't argue. "We'll search the area. If he's out here, we need to move fast."

The three of them spread out, searching the woods around the clearing, calling Jason's name in hushed tones. The forest seemed to swallow their voices, the darkness growing thicker with each passing minute.

Emilia's heart pounded in her chest as she wove through the trees, her flashlight sweeping over the underbrush. Every crack of a twig, every rustle of leaves made her jump. She was hyper-aware of how exposed they were, how easily someone could be watching them from the shadows.

Just as she was about to turn back toward the clearing, she heard a sound. It was faint, but unmistakable—the sound of someone breathing heavily, as if they were injured.

Her heart racing, Emilia followed the sound, moving carefully through the dense undergrowth. As she rounded a tree, her flashlight landed on a figure slumped against the base of the trunk.

It was a man, his clothes torn and bloodstained, his face pale and drawn. He looked up as the light hit him, his eyes wild with fear.

"Jason," Emilia whispered, rushing to his side. "We found you."

But Jason's eyes weren't filled with relief. They were filled with terror.

"They're coming," he gasped, his voice hoarse. "They know you're here."
