As they raced down the corridor, the world outside felt like a distant memory, replaced by the heart-pounding urgency of their escape. The fluorescent lights overhead flickered ominously, casting eerie shadows on the walls as Emilia and her friends sprinted toward the emergency exit Adrian had mentioned.
"Which way?" Jason panted, glancing back nervously as if expecting the men to reappear at any moment.
"Straight ahead!" Adrian pointed, leading them to a door marked with a glowing green sign. "It should be through there."
They reached the door, its metal frame cool against Emilia's palm as she pushed it open. It swung wide, revealing a dimly lit stairwell that spiraled downward into darkness. The smell of mildew hit her like a brick wall, but there was no time to hesitate.
"Go!" Adrian urged, shoving her forward. They descended the stairs two at a time, their footsteps echoing in the tight space.
"Do you think they'll find us?" Lucy's voice trembled as she glanced back at the stairs, anxiety painted across her face.
"They won't know where we went. We just need to keep moving," Adrian reassured her, his tone steady despite the urgency in the air.
As they reached the bottom of the stairs, they found themselves in a narrow hallway lined with more doors. Emilia glanced around, scanning for any signs of danger. There was a heavy metal door at the end of the hall, a sliver of light peeking out from beneath it.
"That's got to be it!" Jason exclaimed, pointing toward the door. "The outside has to be on the other side!"
Adrian nodded, leading the way as they rushed toward the door. He pushed it open, revealing a small storage room filled with crates and boxes, and the sound of muffled voices coming from outside. They slipped inside, crouching behind the crates as they tried to catch their breath.
"Okay, we need to figure out our next move," Adrian said, glancing at the door leading outside. "We can't just walk out there. We need a plan."
"Maybe we can use the crates to block the door and create a distraction?" Lucy suggested, her eyes darting around the room.
Emilia frowned, contemplating the idea. "That could work, but we'd have to make sure we time it perfectly. If they see us moving, we won't have a chance."
"Right," Adrian agreed, his brows furrowing as he considered their options. "What if we create noise on one side of the room, then make a run for the door?"
"Like banging on the crates?" Jason asked, looking hopeful.
"Yes! That could draw their attention away from us," Adrian said, the gears in his mind turning as he formulated the plan. "We can split into two groups. One group makes the noise while the other sneaks out the back."
"Who goes where?" Emilia asked, her heart racing at the thought of being separated again.
"I can make the noise. I know the layout of this place better, and I'll distract them long enough for you guys to get out. You three can take the exit and head straight for the trees," Adrian said, determination in his voice.
"No! That's too dangerous," Emilia protested, a wave of fear washing over her. "What if they catch you?"
"Then I'll figure something out. You need to trust me," Adrian replied, his gaze unwavering. "You're my priority. I'll lead them away. You just need to get to safety."
Tension crackled in the air as Emilia looked between her friends. The decision weighed heavily on her heart, but deep down, she knew they had little choice. They couldn't afford to waste any more time.
