Lucy's words hung in the air like a death sentence, sending a cold chill down Emilia's spine. *They know where we are.* She glanced at Adrian, who was already scanning the trees outside, flashlight beam flickering between the dark shapes in the woods. His jaw clenched, his eyes narrowed with an intensity that made her heart race.

Lucy stood in the doorway, trembling, her face pale and gaunt. Her eyes were wide with fear, darting around the cabin as if expecting someone to burst in at any moment. Emilia grabbed her by the shoulders, guiding her to sit down on the floor next to her.

"Lucy," she whispered, trying to steady her voice. "What happened? Who's coming?"

Lucy's breath was ragged, her hands shaking. "I—I don't know exactly who they are," she stammered. "But they've been following me. Watching me. They were at my house, Emilia. I barely got out in time. I didn't know where else to go."

Emilia's stomach churned with fear. "Did they see you come here?"

Lucy shook her head, her breath shallow. "I don't think so. I cut through the woods, hid when I could. But they're close. I can feel it."

Adrian shut the door behind them, locking it, though it did little to reassure anyone. "We don't have time to stay here. If they're tracking us, this cabin won't protect us for long. We need to move, and fast."

Emilia's mind spun. "But where will we go? They seem to be everywhere."

Adrian turned toward her, his expression unreadable. "We go dark. Completely off the grid. We stop using our phones, our credit cards—everything. We disappear until we figure out who's behind this."

Emilia stared at him, her heart pounding. "Disappear? How? We don't even know where to start looking for answers."

Lucy, still trembling, managed to find her voice. "There's someone who might know. Someone who Daniel talked to before he... before he died."

Adrian's eyes snapped to Lucy. "Who?"

Lucy swallowed, her voice barely above a whisper. "His old friend, Jason. They used to work together, back when Daniel was... into whatever he was doing before he came back to town. Jason always had connections. If anyone knows what Daniel got involved in, it's him."

Emilia felt a flicker of hope, but it was quickly drowned out by the enormity of the situation. Jason might be their only lead, but the idea of tracking him down in the middle of running for their lives felt impossible.

"Where can we find him?" Adrian asked, his voice firm.

Lucy hesitated. "Last I heard, he was living in a small town a few hours from here. I don't know exactly where, but I can try to remember. He was always secretive."

Adrian stood up, pacing the room. "It's a start. We need to get to him before whoever's after us does."

Emilia's heart hammered in her chest. This was all happening so fast. Just days ago, they were living normal lives, and now they were in the middle of a nightmare—Daniel dead, Lucy hunted, and now them, running from an enemy they couldn't even see.

"Okay," Emilia said, standing up, trying to steady her voice. "We'll go find Jason. But how do we even know we can trust him? What if he's part of this?"

Adrian met her eyes, his expression dark. "We don't have any other choice."

They packed quickly. Adrian grabbed the essentials from the car—blankets, food, anything they might need to survive a few days in hiding. Emilia's hands shook as she shoved her few belongings into a bag. Lucy was eerily silent, staring blankly ahead, lost in her own terror.

As they prepared to leave, a sudden, sharp noise outside made everyone freeze. The sound of a branch snapping echoed through the quiet forest, too close for comfort. Adrian flicked off the lantern, plunging them into darkness, and motioned for them to stay quiet.

Emilia held her breath, straining to listen. Footsteps. Slow, deliberate, crunching through the underbrush just outside the cabin.

Her heart slammed against her ribcage, and she could feel Lucy's panic rising beside her. Adrian crouched down, moving silently toward the window, peeking out from the edge of the curtain.

The footsteps stopped.

Emilia's mind raced. Whoever it was, they were right outside. They knew they were there.

Adrian turned back to them, his expression grim. "We have to go. Now."

They moved silently, slipping out through the back door into the pitch-black forest. The air was thick with tension, every sound magnified by the oppressive silence. Emilia's heart pounded as they crept through the woods, staying low, trying not to make any noise.

As they moved further into the forest, the trees grew denser, the darkness swallowing them whole. Adrian led the way, his flashlight off, relying on instinct to guide them. Emilia's pulse raced, every step feeling like a gamble. Behind her, Lucy stumbled, her breathing shallow with fear.

Finally, after what felt like hours, they emerged onto a narrow dirt road, hidden deep within the forest. Adrian motioned for them to stop, his eyes scanning the area.

"We're far enough for now," he whispered. "We'll head to the car and drive straight to where Lucy thinks Jason is. We can't stop until we're there."

Emilia nodded, but something gnawed at her—an uneasy feeling she couldn't shake. "Do you think... do you think they know about Jason? What if they're going after him too?"

Adrian's face was grim. "We'll have to get to him before they do. If he knows something, they'll be coming for him, just like they came for Daniel."

Lucy's eyes were wide with fear. "We need to hurry. If they find him, we're all dead."

Emilia's stomach churned. The thought of Jason being hunted the way Daniel had been... it was unbearable. But even more terrifying was the thought that whoever was behind all of this was still out there, watching them, waiting for the perfect moment to strike.

"We'll find him," Adrian said, his voice low but firm. "We'll get answers. And then, we'll make them pay for what they've done."

But even as he said the words, Emilia couldn't shake the feeling that they were already too late—that the darkness surrounding them was closing in faster than they could escape.
