Jason's warning echoed in Emilia's mind as she crouched beside him, her heart racing with dread. *They know you're here.* The words sent a shiver down her spine, making her feel like the trees themselves were closing in, suffocating them. Jason's face was gaunt, his skin pale and smeared with blood. Whatever he had been through, it had been brutal, and he wasn't safe yet.

Adrian was at her side in seconds, his flashlight sweeping over Jason's injuries. "What happened?" Adrian's voice was low, but urgent. "Who did this to you?"

Jason coughed, wincing in pain as he tried to sit up. "It's them... the same people who got to Daniel. They're after all of us." His breath was ragged, and Emilia could see how much effort it took for him to speak.

"Why?" Emilia asked, her voice trembling. "What do they want?"

Jason's eyes darted around, as if he expected someone to step out from the shadows at any moment. "We got too close. Daniel... he was digging into something he wasn't supposed to. They found out. They killed him... and now they're coming for anyone connected to him."

Lucy stepped forward, her face pale but determined. "Jason, what was Daniel involved in? Why would they kill him for it?"

Jason swallowed hard, his eyes full of regret. "We thought we were just dealing with some underground stuff, nothing too serious. Smuggling, laundering, the usual shady business. But it went deeper than that. Much deeper. These people... they control everything. They're connected to the kind of power that makes people disappear. Daniel found something out—something big—and they couldn't risk it getting out."

Adrian stood up, his eyes scanning the treeline, always on alert. "What did he find out?"

Jason shook his head. "I don't know all of it. Daniel was being careful, only telling me bits and pieces. But it had to do with some high-ranking officials—people you don't mess with. He was going to expose them, but... they got to him first."

Emilia's heart was pounding so hard it felt like it would burst. Daniel had been trying to do the right thing, but it had cost him his life. And now it was costing all of them their safety.

"We need to move," Adrian said, his voice cutting through the tension. "If they know we're here, they'll come for us next."

Jason tried to stand, but he stumbled, his body weak from whatever he had been through. Adrian caught him, pulling his arm over his shoulder to help him stay upright.

"We'll get you out of here," Adrian said firmly, his tone leaving no room for argument. "But we need to know if there's a safe place to go."

Jason hesitated, looking down at the ground. "There's... one place. A safe house Daniel and I used a while back, but it's risky. If they've tracked us this far, they might know about it."

"It's better than staying here," Emilia said, her voice shaky. "We can't stay in the open like this."

Jason nodded weakly. "It's about twenty miles from here, off an old logging road. We can make it by morning if we leave now."

Adrian didn't waste time. He helped Jason back toward the car, while Emilia and Lucy followed close behind. Every rustle in the woods made Emilia's skin prickle with fear. They were being hunted, and the realization that Daniel had uncovered something far more dangerous than she had imagined gnawed at her.

As they reached the car, the oppressive silence of the night felt suffocating. Emilia kept glancing over her shoulder, convinced that at any moment, those faceless pursuers would emerge from the shadows. They had already lost Daniel. The thought of losing anyone else was unbearable.

Adrian helped Jason into the backseat while Emilia slid into the front. The moment Adrian started the car, Emilia felt a surge of adrenaline. They needed to keep moving, to stay ahead of whatever was closing in on them.

The car sped down the narrow road, the headlights illuminating the twisted branches overhead. The road seemed endless, winding deeper into the forest, and the sense of being watched never left Emilia. She glanced at Adrian, who was driving with a fierce intensity, his eyes fixed on the road ahead.

"We need a plan," Emilia said softly, though she wasn't sure if she was speaking to Adrian or to herself. "We can't keep running forever."

Adrian didn't take his eyes off the road. "We find the safe house. We regroup. Then we figure out who these people are and how to stop them."

Emilia wished it were that simple. She glanced back at Jason, who was pale and shaking in the backseat. He had survived, but just barely. How much longer could any of them last?

Lucy, who had been quiet for most of the drive, spoke up, her voice trembling. "What if we can't stop them? What if they find us no matter where we go?"

Jason let out a weak, bitter laugh. "They're not invincible. Dangerous, yes, but not invincible. They rely on fear to keep people in line. That's how they've stayed hidden for so long. If we can expose them... really expose them, we might have a chance."

"But how?" Emilia asked, turning to face him. "We don't even know who they are."

Jason's eyes darkened. "Daniel had a contact. Someone on the inside. If we can find them, they might have what we need to bring these people down."

Adrian's grip tightened on the wheel. "Where is this contact?"

Jason's voice was weak, but he managed to respond. "I don't know exactly. Daniel never told me their name. But he left me a clue, something I was supposed to use if anything happened to him. It's back at my place—hidden."

Emilia's pulse quickened. "Then we need to get it. Whatever Daniel left behind, it's our only chance."

Adrian nodded, though his expression was grim. "We'll get to the safe house first. After that, we'll figure out how to retrieve the clue."

The car sped on through the night, the forest growing thicker, the road narrower. Emilia couldn't shake the feeling that they were driving straight into the heart of danger. But what choice did they have? Whoever had killed Daniel wasn't going to stop until they had silenced everyone connected to him.

As the sun began to rise, casting an eerie, pale light over the forest, Emilia spotted something in the distance. A small cabin, half-hidden by the trees. The safe house.

But as they pulled up, something wasn't right. The door was ajar, and the windows were dark. Emilia's heart sank. Had they been too late again?

Adrian parked the car, and they all got out, the silence pressing down on them like a weight. He approached the door cautiously, gun in hand, motioning for Emilia and Lucy to stay back.

The moment Adrian pushed the door open, Emilia's worst fears were confirmed. Inside the cabin, the place had been ransacked—furniture overturned, papers scattered everywhere. But that wasn't what made Emilia's blood run cold.

On the wall, written in bold, dark letters, was a message.

*You're next.*

Adrian turned to Emilia, his expression hard. "They know we're here."

And suddenly, the safe house didn't feel so safe anymore.
