The next day, Soonyoung decided it was time to have a heart-to-heart with Vernon. He found him in the living room, his usual timid demeanor on full display. The way Vernon fiddled with his hands and avoided eye contact made him seem like a deer caught in headlights, especially in front of Soonyoung, who often had a kind intimidating father in law aura around him.
“Vernon,” Soonyoung began, taking a seat across from him. “We need to talk about Seungkwan.”
Vernon looked up, his eyes wide and slightly panicked. “Is he okay? I mean, I know things have been… tense between us.”
Soonyoung nodded, his expression serious but also filled with warmth. “Yeah, that’s exactly it. He is feeling overwhelmed with everything—the pregnancy, the relationship. And honestly, you are not helping matters.”
“I didn’t mean to,” Vernon stammered, his voice barely above a whisper. “I just don’t know what to do. Every time I try to talk to him, he just… shuts me out.”
“Exactly! That’s why we need to work on this,” Soonyoung replied, leaning forward, his tone shifting from serious to a bit more affectionate. “You need to bear with him, Vernon. Show him patience. He needs to know that you are there for him, no matter what.”
Vernon nodded slowly, his brow furrowed as he absorbed Soonyoung’s words. “But how do I do that? I feel like every time I try, it just makes things worse.”
“Start with love,” Soonyoung instructed, his voice firm yet encouraging. “Show him you care. Sometimes, it’s the little things that make the biggest difference. Cook him dinner, surprise him with something he loves, or just be there to listen when he wants to talk. You have to remind him that you’re still the same Vernon he fell in love with, even with or without a baby on the way.”
“But what if he doesn’t want that?” Vernon asked, uncertainty flooding his features. “What if he pushes me away again?”
Soonyoung softened, his expression turning earnest. “Then you have to show him that you won’t give up. You need to be consistent. He needs to see that you’ve changed, that you’re ready to be a partner in this. Show him that nothing will go wrong if he lets you in. Be his rock. He’s scared, and fear can make people act irrationally.” Soonyoung took a breath. "And most importantly, he is scared. Scared of being a mom like he once had."
Vernon looked down, his heart heavy with guilt and frustration. “ I didn’t understand the gravity. I just don’t want to mess things up more than they already are. I care about him so much, but I feel so helpless.”
“Then take it one step at a time,” Soonyoung encouraged. “Don’t rush it. Show him affection, but also give him space when he needs it. And for goodness' sake, don’t let him think you’re only interested in the baby or sex. Let him know he’s still your priority.”
“But how?” Vernon asked, his voice laced with desperation. “What if he thinks I’m just saying these things?”
Soonyoung smiled, a mischievous glint in his eye. “Then you do something unexpected. Do something that makes him laugh, something that reminds him of the fun you used to have together. If you can get him to smile, even for a moment, it’ll break down those walls he’s built up.”
Vernon took a deep breath, nodding more confidently this time. “Okay, I can try that. But what if he still doesn’t respond?”
“Then you keep trying. Be persistent. If I can break the walls of Yhe Lee Jihoon... You can definitely.” Soonyoung said, his tone turning stern. “Don’t hesitate, Vernon. This is important. You’re about to be a dad, and you need to show Seungkwan that he’s not alone in this. You’re both in it together, and he needs to feel that from you.”
Vernon’s resolve strengthened. “You’re right. I’ve got to show him that I’m committed to this—committed to us. I just hope he’ll give me a chance.”
“He will,” Soonyoung reassured him, clapping a hand on Vernon’s shoulder. “You just have to be brave and open your heart. He loves you, even if it doesn’t feel like it right now. Just remember, patience is key. You got this!”
With newfound determination, Vernon stood up, straightening his shoulders. “Thanks, Soonyoung. I really appreciate your help. I’ll make sure to show Seungkwan how much he means to me.”
“Good! Now go and make him a nice meal or something,” Soonyoung said, giving him a playful shove. “And don’t forget to throw in a little charm. You’re a catch, remember?”
Vernon chuckled, a hint of confidence returning to him. “I’ll do my best. Thanks again, hyeong.”
As he headed toward the kitchen, Soonyoung couldn’t help but feel a sense of pride. He knew that if anyone could bring Seungkwan and Vernon back together, it was Vernon himself—especially now that he had the right mindset. Soonyoung could only hope that Seungkwan would be receptive to the love and care Vernon was about to shower on him.
