« You sit on the couch, a blanket draped over your lap as you watch Choso from the corner of your eye. He's on the floor with two-year-old Yuji, who's currently fascinated by the stuffed animal in his hands—a panda, of course. »
Choso's usual stoic expression is softer. His dark eyes following Yuji's every move; as if he's ready to spring into action should the little one so much as wobble.
Yuji giggles, waving the stuffed panda around like it's a weapon. Choso doesn't react much, but you notice the faintest upturn of his lips. It's those small moments that make you feel a warmth inside your chest.
He's so serious most of the time, so when he's like this—calm, content, with Yuji—it makes your heart swell. "Yuji, careful." You call out softly, though you're not too concerned. He's a sturdy little guy, and Choso's got him under control.
Choso glances at you, his gaze lingering for a second longer than necessary. He soon shifts his attention back to Yuji. "He's fine," the older man says, his deep voice as gentle as you've ever heard it. "Aren't you, Yuji?"
"Fine!" Yuji echoes back, not really understanding but clearly enjoying being part of the conversation. He bounces on his little legs, almost losing balance but righting himself just in time. You laugh softly, shaking your head.
"You're going to wear him out at this rate," you tease, settling back into the cushions. "Which, honestly, wouldn't be the worst thing."
Choso hums in agreement, though you can tell he enjoys these moments as much as Yuji does. There's a quiet peace that fills the room.. one you never thought you'd experience in your life.
Especially not with Choso, of all people.
He's someone who carries so much weight, so much responsibility. And yet, here he is, sitting cross-legged on the floor with his baby brother.
Yuji eventually tires of the stuffed panda and toddles over to you. His tiny hands reaching out, "up!" he demands, and you oblige, lifting him into your lap and wrapping the blanket around him.
He snuggles into you, his head resting against your chest. You gently stroke his hair, feeling the soft tufts under your fingers. Choso watches the two of you, something unreadable flickering in his eyes.
You've seen that look before—it's a mixture of awe and something deeper, something that makes your heart race a little faster whenever you catch it. "He really likes you," Choso says, his voice quiet, almost contemplative.
"I think it's more the blanket," you joke, but the way Yuji nestles further into you tells a different story. There's a bond forming between you and the little guy, and you wonder if Choso feels the same.
Choso rises from the floor and moves to sit beside you on the couch, his arm resting on the back of it. The proximity is comforting, a silent promise that he's right there if you need him. You lean to the side, feeling the warmth of his presence, and Yuji's soft breaths begin to even out as he drifts off to sleep.
"He's out," you whisper, glancing down at the now-slumbering Yuji in your arms. Choso looks at you with a soft expression that's rare for him but has become more frequent lately. "You're good with him."
"So are you," you reply, meeting his gaze. There's something unspoken between you two, a mutual understanding that goes beyond words. You're both caring for Yuji, but in doing so, you're also caring for each other.
The room falls into a comfortable silence, the kind that doesn't need to be filled. Yuji's small, even breaths are the only sound, a soft rhythm that seems to match the steady beat of your own heart. Choso's arm slips from the back of the couch to rest on your shoulder, and you feel the gentle pressure of his hand, grounding you.
It's moments like this where you realize how much things have changed. Choso, once so distant and focused on revenge, has found a new sense of purpose—one that includes not just protecting Yuji, but also being part of something softer, more personal.
"How did we end up here?" you ask quietly, your voice barely above a whisper. It's not that you're complaining, far from it. It's just... unexpected.
Choso's eyes meet yours again, and there's a tenderness in them that makes your chest tighten. "I'm not sure," he admits, his voice low and steady. "But I don't want it to end."
You smile at that, a real, genuine smile, and shift closer to him, careful not to wake Yuji. "Me neither."
For a while, the two of you just sit there, basking in the warmth of each other's company and the quiet stillness of the moment. It feels like the world has paused, and all that exists is you, Choso, and the peacefully sleeping Yuji between you.
"You're so serious all the time," you say softly, breaking the silence. "But I like this side of you." Choso raises an eyebrow, clearly intrigued by your comment. "What side?"
"The side that's calm. Content. Happy, even," you say, your gaze meeting his. "I think it suits you."
He doesn't respond right away, but his thumb brushes lightly against your shoulder, a small but deliberate gesture."I feel that way only with you."
Your heart skips a beat at his words. There's no grand declaration, no sweeping confession, but that's never been Choso's style. What he's said is enough, more than enough.
You lean your head against his shoulder, closing your eyes. "Good," you whisper, letting the warmth of the moment wash over you.
For now, everything is perfect. You have Choso by your side, Yuji safe in your arms, and a peace you never thought you'd find. And as Choso's arm tightens ever so slightly around you, you know that this is where you're meant to be.
"I love you, Choso."
"..shut up."
