The city streets were quieter than usual as Karan, Preeta, Ishaan, and Savi followed Maya into the old, rundown building.
The place looked abandoned, with peeling paint and broken windows, but Maya assured them this was where the answers lay.
Karan's mind raced as they walked through the dark, narrow corridors. His heart beat steadily, but each step made him feel closer to uncovering the painful truth about his parents' deaths.
Preeta stayed close to Karan, her presence giving him a strange sense of comfort.
She hadn't said much since they got in the car, but her quiet support spoke louder than words.
Her hand brushed against his as they walked, and although neither said anything, the brief contact felt like a silent promise-one of trust and unspoken understanding.
Ishaan and Savi were slightly behind, the tension evident in the way Ishaan's jaw tightened as they moved deeper into the building.
Savi, usually the source of light-heartedness, had a rare frown on her face. "I don't like this place," she whispered, clutching Ishaan's arm.
He nodded slightly. "Stay alert."
Maya led them down a hidden stairwell, into what seemed like a basement.
The air grew cooler, and the only light came from a single flickering bulb above. "This place holds the records of everything the organization has been involved in for years," Maya explained. "And that includes what happened to your family, Karan."
Karan's grip on Preeta's hand tightened involuntarily.
Preeta looked at him, her soft eyes silently telling him that she was there for him-no matter what they discovered.
---
They reached a locked steel door.
Maya fumbled with a key she had pulled from her jacket. "Beyond this door are files-proof of everything they've done. But once we go in, there's no turning back. Are you all ready for this?"
Karan's voice was calm, but his resolve was clear. "We've come too far to turn back now."
Maya pushed the door open, and they stepped inside. The room was large, filled with rows upon rows of shelves, all lined with old dusty files.
A single desk sat in the middle, cluttered with papers and a dimly lit computer.
"Start looking," Maya said. "The files about Karan's parents should be here, somewhere in this mess."
Everyone spread out, flipping through the documents, hoping for some breakthrough. The silence in the room was thick, broken only by the occasional shuffle of paper.
But Karan couldn't help feeling that something was wrong.
---
As they searched, Preeta found herself next to Karan, who had picked up an old, weathered file.
He opened it slowly, his expression hardening as he skimmed through the contents.
Preeta leaned closer, peering over his shoulder.
Her eyes widened at what she saw-a list of names, dates, and locations, all connected to a series of mysterious accidents and deaths.
"Karan... this is..." Preeta started, her voice trembling slightly.
He nodded grimly. "It's all here. Everything. The accidents that were no accidents at all. They killed my parents, Preeta. They made it look like an accident, but it was murder."
