A few days later, Alex found himself hanging out with Tara and Eli almost every lunch break. The cafeteria was too loud and chaotic for him, but the library, with its shelves full of stories and quiet corners, was quickly becoming his favorite place. Tara was always full of energy, bouncing between books and new ideas, while Eli brought a laid-back sense of humor that kept things light. Alex found himself laughing more than he had in weeks.

It was during one of these library sessions that Tara brought up the topic of the hideout.

"You know," she said casually, flipping through a magazine, "there's supposed to be this old cabin in the woods near the school."

Alex raised an eyebrow. "A cabin?"

"Yeah, it's been abandoned for years," Eli added, leaning back in his chair. "Rumor has it, it's completely hidden. People say it was a secret meeting spot for explorers or something."

"Or something," Tara echoed dramatically. "But no one's found it in ages. We could be the first!"

Alex hesitated. He wasn't sure if this was just another one of Tara's wild ideas, or if she was serious. Either way, the thought of going out into the woods to find a mysterious hideout sounded a lot more exciting than sitting in the library.

"You're serious?" Alex asked.

"Totally," Tara said with a mischievous grin. "We could go after school. I've been meaning to explore those woods anyway."

Eli shrugged. "I'm in. Anything beats math homework."

Alex thought about it for a second. Maybe this was exactly what he needed-a chance to do something different, something adventurous. And besides, he was starting to trust these two more every day.

"All right," he said, surprising himself. "Let's do it."

That afternoon, the three of them gathered at the edge of the woods, just behind the schoolyard. The trees stretched up tall and dense, their branches swaying in the cool breeze. The air smelled fresh, like earth and pine.

Tara led the way, of course, darting ahead with excitement. Eli followed, more relaxed, cracking jokes as they walked. Alex kept pace behind them, feeling a thrill he hadn't expected.

The deeper they went, the quieter the world became, the only sound the crunch of leaves beneath their feet. And then, after what felt like an hour of wandering, Tara suddenly stopped.

"There!" she whispered, pointing ahead.

Through the trees, partially hidden by vines and overgrown bushes, was the outline of a small, old cabin. Its wooden walls were faded and weather-worn, but it stood there, solid and real.

"We found it," Eli said, his voice full of awe.

For the first time in a long while, Alex felt like he was part of something-something exciting, something that was theirs. And in that moment, he knew this wasn't just a hideout. It was a beginning.
