With the dog now a part of their group, things at the cabin seemed perfect. Every afternoon, the trio would bring scraps of food and supplies, making sure their little hideout was the ideal sanctuary for both them and their new friend.

But as the weeks went on, word about their secret cabin began to spread-though not in the way they'd hoped.

One chilly afternoon, as the trio approached their hideout, they noticed something was wrong. The front door, which they usually left slightly ajar, was now wide open, swinging on its creaky hinges. Inside, the blankets they had carefully placed around were tossed aside, and the lanterns they had brought were missing.

"What happened?" Tara gasped, running ahead. "Who would do this?"

Alex's heart sank as he looked around. "This can't be good."

Eli's face darkened. "I've got a pretty good idea who's behind this."

Sure enough, as they cleaned up the mess, they heard voices approaching from the direction of the school. Laughter and loud footsteps echoed through the woods, and soon, three older boys-eighth graders by the look of them-appeared at the edge of the clearing.

"Well, well, well," one of them sneered, crossing his arms. "Looks like the little kids found our old spot."

Tara stepped forward, her fists clenched. "This is our hideout! We found it, fair and square!"

The leader of the group, a tall boy with a smirk on his face, raised an eyebrow. "Oh yeah? Well, too bad. We were here first, years ago. This place belongs to us."

Eli, never one to back down from a challenge, stepped up beside Tara. "You guys abandoned it. It's ours now. Why don't you just leave?"

The older boys laughed, and the leader gave a mock sigh. "Cute. Real cute. But we're not going anywhere. You either hand it over, or we'll make you."

Alex felt a knot of fear tighten in his stomach. He'd never been in a situation like this before, and he wasn't sure what to do. But as he looked at Tara and Eli, standing their ground, he knew he couldn't just stay silent.

Taking a deep breath, Alex stepped forward. "We're not going to fight you," he said, his voice surprisingly steady. "But this place means something to us. You guys left it behind, but we've made it our own."

For a moment, the older boys seemed taken aback by Alex's calm response. The leader glanced at his friends, uncertainty flickering across his face. But then he shrugged.

"Whatever. You'll be hearing from us soon," he said with a sneer before turning and leading his group back into the woods.

As soon as they were out of earshot, Tara let out a frustrated groan. "I can't believe them! They can't just take it from us!"

Eli clenched his fists. "We can't let them get away with this. We've worked too hard on this place."

Alex felt his heart racing, but he tried to stay calm. "We'll figure it out," he said quietly. "We're not alone in this."

And as they stood together in the fading light, Alex knew that no matter what came next, they would face it as a team.
