The next day after school, the trio met at the edge of the woods once more, each carrying supplies to help fix up the cabin. Tara had a backpack full of cleaning supplies, Eli brought a hammer and some old nails he'd found in his garage, and Alex had grabbed a flashlight and a couple of old blankets his mom didn't need anymore.

The walk to the cabin was filled with laughter and jokes. Eli had a way of turning every small mishap into something funny-like when Tara nearly tripped over a root, or when Alex accidentally dropped one of the blankets into a patch of mud.

By the time they reached the cabin, the sun was starting to set, casting a warm orange glow over the trees.

"All right," Tara said, hands on her hips as she surveyed the cabin. "Let's get to work!"

They started by sweeping out the dust and dirt that had collected over the years. Eli found a broom in the back of the storage room that, while a bit worse for wear, still managed to do the job. Tara focused on cleaning the windows, humming to herself as she worked. Alex, meanwhile, took on the task of patching up the holes in the walls using some old boards they had found outside.

As they worked, the place started to feel less abandoned and more like their own secret spot. The light coming through the now-clear windows made the room seem brighter, and with the blankets spread across the floor, the cabin was slowly turning into a cozy retreat.

During a break, the three of them sat on the floor, munching on snacks Tara had brought.

"This is so much better than just hanging out at school," Tara said, leaning back against the wall. "I mean, we've got our own place now."

Eli nodded. "Yeah. We can come here whenever we want. It's like...our own little world."

Alex glanced around the cabin, feeling a warmth in his chest. For the first time in a long while, he felt like he belonged somewhere. He wasn't just the new kid trying to fit in-he was part of something, part of a team. And as he looked at Tara and Eli, he realized they felt the same way.

They stayed until the sun disappeared behind the trees, talking about all the things they could do with their new hideout. Tara suggested turning one of the old shelves into a bookcase for all the stories they wanted to share. Eli came up with the idea of bringing in some old lamps for when it got dark. Alex, feeling more confident than he had in weeks, even suggested painting the cabin to give it a fresh start.

As they packed up and headed home, the three friends were already planning their next visit. The cabin was theirs now, and with it, a friendship that was growing stronger with every adventure.
