The following days were tense for Alex, Tara, and Eli. Every afternoon, they returned to the cabin, half-expecting to find the older boys there or some new damage done. But each time, the hideout remained untouched. Still, the threat of the older boys hung over them like a dark cloud.
"We can't just sit around and wait for them to show up again," Tara said one afternoon as they gathered at the hideout. She had brought more supplies to fix up the cabin, but her frustration was obvious. "We need a plan."
Eli nodded, pacing around the small space. "They're not going to just leave us alone. We have to make it clear this place is ours."
Alex, sitting quietly by the window, felt a mix of emotions. The thought of standing up to the older boys made him nervous. What if they came back with even more kids? What if things got out of hand? But he also knew that the hideout meant too much to let it go without a fight.
"What if we... invited them to talk?" Alex suggested hesitantly. "Maybe if we show them that we're not going to back down, but we also don't want a fight, they'll back off."
Eli raised an eyebrow. "You really think they'll listen?"
Alex shrugged. "It's worth a try. I don't want to fight them, and I don't think you guys do either."
Tara sighed, crossing her arms. "I don't want to fight, but I also don't want to give in. If we talk to them, they might just take advantage of us."
Alex could understand her frustration. He felt the same anger bubbling inside him. But deep down, he knew that if they tried to fight back in the same way the older boys were, things could get worse.
"I think Alex is onto something," Eli finally said, stopping his pacing. "Maybe if we show them that we're not scared, but we're also not looking for trouble, they'll lose interest. Bullies don't like it when you don't give them what they want."
Tara looked from Eli to Alex, her expression softening. "Fine. But the second they try anything, we're not holding back."
Alex smiled, relieved that they were all on the same page. "We'll stand together. No matter what happens."
