The tension between Tara, Eli, and Alex had been building for days. Every time they tried to move forward with their club, something went wrong-tools went missing, small decorations they'd added to the cabin were destroyed, and each day it seemed like the older boys were watching from the shadows, though they never showed their faces.
One afternoon, as the trio met at the cabin, Tara's frustration finally boiled over.
"This is pointless!" she exclaimed, throwing down the broom she had been using to sweep the floor. "We try to fix this place up, and every time we do, it gets ruined! What's the point of doing all this work if it's just going to be trashed again?"
Eli, who had been trying to repair one of the broken lanterns, stood up abruptly. "You think I don't know that? But giving up now is exactly what they want!"
Tara's eyes flashed with anger. "I'm not saying we give up. I'm saying this isn't fair! We shouldn't have to keep fixing everything just because those jerks want to mess with us."
Alex, sensing that the argument was spiraling out of control, tried to step in. "Guys, let's calm down. We can figure this out."
But Eli wasn't backing down. "You're acting like we're the only ones this is hard for," he said, his voice rising. "We're all tired, Tara. We all want this place to be safe. But we can't let them push us around."
Tara crossed her arms, glaring at Eli. "You're not the one who's been working the hardest on this! You show up when it's convenient, but you don't actually care as much as we do!"
Eli's face went red, and Alex knew this was going in a bad direction. "That's not true," Eli snapped. "I care about this place just as much as you do! You think you're the only one who can fix things?"
The argument hung in the air, both Tara and Eli staring each other down. Alex could feel the anger radiating from both of them, and it hurt to see his friends like this.
"I care about this place, too," Alex said quietly. "We all do. But fighting with each other isn't going to solve anything."
Tara and Eli both turned to look at him, their expressions softening just slightly. Alex continued, his voice steady. "We started this club to help people and to create a place where we could all feel safe. If we start fighting with each other, we're just giving those boys what they want."
For a long moment, there was silence. Tara's anger seemed to drain out of her as she realized what Alex was saying, and Eli let out a frustrated sigh, running a hand through his hair.
"You're right," Tara finally said, her voice soft. "I'm sorry, Eli. I just... I hate feeling like we're losing."
Eli gave a small nod. "Me too. I don't want to lose this place. I'm sorry, too."
Alex smiled, relieved that the tension had started to lift. "We'll figure it out," he said again, more confidently this time. "We've faced harder things before. We can get through this."
Tara managed a small smile. "Together?"
"Together," Eli agreed.
