The next day after school, the trio made their way to the woods, a plan forming in their minds. They hadn't seen the older boys since their last encounter, but they had a feeling it was only a matter of time before they showed up again.
Sure enough, as they approached the cabin, the familiar sound of laughter echoed through the trees. Alex's heart pounded in his chest, but he took a deep breath and reminded himself of their plan.
The older boys were already inside the cabin when Alex, Tara, and Eli arrived. The leader-the tall boy with the smirk-was sitting on the windowsill, his friends lounging around as if the place was their own.
"Well, look who's back," the leader said with a sneer as the three friends stepped inside. "Come to give up your little hideout?"
Tara shot him a glare but stayed silent. Eli, always the one to speak his mind, crossed his arms and stepped forward.
"We're not giving up anything," Eli said firmly. "This place is ours now, and we're not backing down."
The leader chuckled, glancing at his friends. "You really think you can just claim this place?"
Alex, feeling a surge of courage, stepped beside Eli. "You guys left this cabin years ago. You didn't care about it. We've spent time fixing it up and making it ours. We're not trying to start a fight, but we're not going to let you push us around either."
For a moment, there was silence. The older boys seemed taken aback by Alex's calm but firm tone. They had expected fear or anger-something they could use to their advantage. But instead, they were met with calm determination.
The leader stood up, his expression hardening. "You think talking is going to change anything?"
Eli narrowed his eyes. "No, but we're not scared of you."
Tara stepped forward then, her voice steady. "Look, we're just asking for respect. You abandoned this place. We've turned it into something that matters to us. If you're going to keep coming here just to mess with us, that's on you. But we're not going anywhere."
The leader stared at them for a long moment, his jaw clenched. His friends shifted uncomfortably, glancing between him and the trio. It was clear that the confrontation wasn't going the way they had expected.
Finally, after what felt like forever, the leader sighed and shook his head. "You guys are weird, you know that?"
Eli smirked. "Takes one to know one."
The leader rolled his eyes and waved a hand dismissively. "Fine. Keep your stupid cabin. We've got better things to do."
With that, the older boys turned and left, their footsteps fading into the woods.
As soon as they were gone, Tara let out a deep breath she hadn't realized she was holding. "I can't believe that worked."
Alex smiled, his heart still racing but filled with relief. "Me neither."
Eli grinned and leaned against the wall. "I told you. Bullies hate it when you don't give them what they want."
They stood in the cabin for a few moments, letting the weight of what had just happened sink in. They had stood their ground, and it had worked. The cabin was theirs again-no fights, no trouble, just the strength of their friendship.
As the afternoon sun filtered through the windows, Alex felt a wave of pride. Not just for himself, but for all of them. Together, they had faced something difficult, and they had come out stronger.
