Autumn had fully set in, and the woods around the cabin were now a mix of gold, orange, and brown. The crisp air smelled of pine and damp leaves, making the hideout feel even more magical. Every time Alex, Tara, and Eli met there, it felt like they were stepping into a world that was entirely their own.

One Saturday afternoon, as the trio sat inside their cabin discussing plans to add a small bookshelf, they heard a faint noise from outside. Alex was the first to notice, pausing mid-sentence.

"Did you guys hear that?" he asked, his brow furrowing.

Tara stopped drawing on the floor with a stick and tilted her head, listening. "Yeah... what is that?"

Eli, ever curious, stood up and went to the window. He peered through the cracked glass, squinting into the trees. "It sounds like... a dog?"

Alex joined him at the window, straining to hear the noise again. A few seconds later, it came-a soft whimper, barely audible over the rustle of leaves in the wind.

"We should check it out," Alex suggested, feeling a mixture of concern and excitement. "What if it's lost?"

Tara was already grabbing her jacket. "Let's go! If it's a stray, we can help it."

The three friends hurried outside and followed the sound into the woods. As they ventured deeper, the whimpering grew louder, and soon enough, they spotted a small, scruffy dog stuck between some thorny bushes, its fur matted and tangled in the brambles.

"Oh no, poor thing!" Tara gasped as she knelt down, trying to calm the dog with soothing words.

Eli crouched beside her. "Looks like it's been out here for a while. Must've gotten lost."

Alex's heart went out to the little creature. It looked so scared, its dark eyes wide with panic. "We need to get it out of there," he said. "But be careful-those thorns look sharp."

They worked together, carefully untangling the dog from the brambles. Tara gently held the dog's head while Alex and Eli pried apart the branches. After a few tense moments, they freed it, and the dog immediately huddled close to Tara, trembling but clearly relieved.

Tara stroked its fur, speaking softly. "You're okay now. We've got you."

"What should we do with it?" Alex asked, glancing around as if expecting the owner to appear.

"I think it's a stray," Eli said, looking at the dog's thin frame. "Doesn't look like it's been cared for in a while."

Tara stood up, cradling the dog in her arms. "We can't just leave it here. Let's take it back to the cabin, at least for tonight. Maybe we can find out if anyone's missing a dog, or we can bring it to a shelter."

Alex nodded in agreement. "Yeah, we can keep it safe until we figure something out."

With the dog in tow, the trio made their way back to the hideout. Once inside, they found an old blanket to make a bed for the dog, which immediately curled up, exhausted but seemingly grateful for the warmth and safety.

Tara knelt beside it, her face soft with concern. "We'll take care of you, little guy. Don't worry."

Eli grinned, though there was a hint of seriousness in his voice. "Looks like we've got ourselves a new cabin companion."

As they sat in the cabin, watching over their new furry friend, Alex couldn't help but feel proud of how well they had worked together. It reminded him of how important their friendship had become, how much stronger they were as a team.

For the first time in a long while, Alex felt like he was part of something bigger-something good.
