Lucien had barely slept when the sun finally came up.

He had spent the majority of the night with Darren, counting stars and sharing stories until his eyes began to feel heavy. Darren had left him there to return to Madhai and the siphon only moved when he heard the sound of someone else stepping out into the early morning.

His eyes were still heavy and his entire body felt weighted but somehow, he still harnessed some energy to gather himself together. Today, just for today, he had to be on his best behavior for the fate of their safety relied on him.

Just as he finished getting dressed, he heard a knock on the door before it opened. Lucien turned around to see Talon standing by the door, a smug look on his face. He was dressed in a royal blue ensemble but around his neck was a gold necklace resembling one that Arsen had.

"Can I help you?" the siphon asked, raising his brow. "I don't remember asking you to come in."

"Just making sure you are awake and alert for the day. Wouldn't want you slumbering on such an important day like this" he remarked. His dark eyes reluctantly traced him up and down, taking him in. "I guess you do know how to make yourself look presentable."

This time, Lucien passed him a confused look, a deep frown on his face. "I receive enough heckling from Esmeralda. I certainly do not need it from you" the siphon said as he fashioned a weapons belt around his hips before grabbing a cloak to drag over him.

The chilly morning air was rather unsettling as he dragged his way through the tall blades of grass to the elder tree in the middle of the field where the silhouettes of Esmeralda, Arsen, and Darren could be seen. He furrowed his brows as he attempted to look behind the tree for the others but Talon's voice cut through his thoughts again.

"Looking for a particular witch?"

This time, the siphon let out a deep sigh. "Venix is the least of my concerns and I can assure you, I am the least of hers."

This time, Talon let out a chuckle. "At least you got that part right."

Lucien could feel the heat in his chest grow as it gradually spread to his face but he reluctantly held his anger at bay as they finally approached the tree. Esmeralda turned to him as he got closer to her, her eyes sweeping over her attire.

"Good morning" Lucien grunted.

"Morning. How are you feeling?" she asked as she adjusted the cuffs of her dress. "I am counting on you to be the perfect right-hand man to me today."

"A role I've certainly been in before" he commented, earning a side-eye glance from his sister. Still, he sighed and nodded his head. "I promise you, I will be presentable today."

"Good. Hopefully, if all goes well, we can shift our tribe over to these lands and keep them safe as refugees while we deal with the problem" she whispered.
