The morning sun cast a gentle glow over Wei Ying’s private garden, filtering through the leaves and illuminating the delicate flowers that surrounded her. She had just finished her morning routine, seeking solace in this serene space that had always been her refuge. The gentle breeze carried the sweet scent of blooming jasmine, and the sound of birds singing filled the air, offering a brief respite from the burdens of her divine duties.
As she sat on a stone bench, her thoughts wandered, but before she could fully lose herself in the tranquility of the moment, one of her most trusted staff members approached her with a slight bow. "High Goddess Wei Ying," she began softly, "the High God of Technology is here to see you."
Wei Ying's heart skipped a beat, and she felt a familiar tightness in her chest. Despite the time that had passed and the walls she had carefully built around her heart, just hearing that Lan Zhan was here sent her emotions into a whirlwind. For a brief moment, she considered asking her staff to send him away, but something within her resisted. Instead, she nodded, her voice steady though her heart was anything but. "Bring him here."
Moments later, Lan Zhan appeared at the entrance of her garden. He hesitated for a moment, his eyes locking onto hers, a complex mix of emotions playing across his features. Wei Ying tried to steel herself, to remain composed as he approached, but the closer he got, the harder it became to maintain her calm facade. She could feel her heart racing, pounding so loudly she was sure he could hear it.
When he finally stood before her, there was a moment of silence, both of them taking in the sight of one another. Lan Zhan seemed to struggle to find the right words, his gaze shifting from the ground to her eyes, his usual confidence tempered with uncertainty. "Wei Ying," he began, his voice soft but laden with emotion, "I know I don’t deserve to ask this, but could we talk?"
Wei Ying simply nodded, her voice caught in her throat. She gestured for him to sit beside her on the bench, but instead, Lan Zhan remained standing, his posture tense as if what he had to say was too important to be said sitting down.
“I’ve hurt you,” he said, finally breaking the silence, “more than I can ever atone for. And I’m sorry, truly. I know an apology can’t change what happened, but I need you to know that I regret every moment that brought you pain.”
Wei Ying listened, her expression unreadable, though her heart was in turmoil. She had imagined this conversation many times during her months of self-imposed distance, but now that it was happening, it felt surreal. She met his gaze steadily, though her voice wavered slightly when she spoke. "I’ve forgiven you, Lan Zhan. I had to, for my own sake. But I’m not the same person I was before. I’ve grown, and I’ve learned to protect myself.”
Lan Zhan seemed to falter at her words, his shoulders slumping slightly as the weight of her forgiveness, and her change, settled on him. But then he straightened, determination flashing in his eyes. “I know you’ve changed, and I respect that. But I haven’t stopped loving you, Wei Ying. I never did. And I’ll never give up on you. I want you back, more than anything.”
Wei Ying’s heart ached at his words. She had dreamed of hearing them, but now, in the reality of the moment, they felt bittersweet. She opened her mouth to respond, but no words came. Instead, she turned away from him, needing a moment to collect herself, to gather the strength to walk away if that was what she decided.
But before she could take more than a few steps, she felt a sudden, firm pull, and then his arms were around her, holding her tightly against his chest. She gasped, her heart racing as he pressed her back against him. The warmth of his embrace, the familiarity of his touch—it was overwhelming, and all the resolve she had mustered threatened to crumble.
Slowly, she turned in his arms, intending to tell him to let go, but as she did, her lips brushed against his, sending a jolt of electricity through her. Before she could think, before she could stop herself, she found herself kissing him back, her hands instinctively reaching up to cling to him. The kiss was passionate, filled with all the longing and love they had both buried for so long. Her heart pounded in her chest, her legs growing weak as the world around them seemed to blur into nothingness.
Lan Zhan deepened the kiss, pressing her gently against the wall, his hands cradling her face as if she were something precious and fragile. Wei Ying felt herself giving in, the barriers she had built slowly crumbling under the intensity of the moment. When he finally broke the kiss, they were both breathless, their foreheads resting together as they tried to collect themselves.
“I’m not giving up on you,” Lan Zhan whispered against her lips, his voice raw with emotion. “Not now, not ever.”
Wei Ying’s heart was still racing, her mind a whirl of confusion and longing. She wanted to speak, to say something, anything, but the words wouldn’t come. Instead, she simply nodded, her eyes shimmering with unshed tears.
Lan Zhan kissed her one more time, a softer, lingering kiss that left her trembling. Then, with a final, lingering look, he stepped back, releasing her from his embrace. “I’ll see you soon, Wei Ying,” he said softly, before turning and leaving her garden, leaving her standing there, her heart in turmoil and her mind filled with questions.
As he disappeared from sight, Wei Ying leaned back against the wall, closing her eyes as she tried to steady her breathing. The warmth of his touch still lingered on her skin, and as she touched her lips, she could still feel the ghost of his kiss. The love she had fought so hard to bury had resurfaced with a vengeance, and now, she was left with the daunting task of figuring out what to do next.
The path ahead was uncertain, but one thing was clear—her heart was no longer as guarded as it once was. And with Lan Zhan’s promise still echoing in her mind, Wei Ying knew that the journey ahead would be anything but easy.
