The fact that she was standing in front of me, in this place, was all the answer I needed.
"Do you want to know why I've been watching you?" I asked, my voice low, letting the words hang in the air between us.
She nodded, her breath hitching slightly. "Yes."
I reached out, gently brushing a strand of hair from her face, and I could feel her stiffen at my touch.
She was afraid, but she didn't pull away.
That was what mattered.
She wasn't running.
"I've been watching you because you don't belong in the world you've been living in," I said softly, my eyes never leaving hers. "You've been playing it safe, hiding away in that little bookshop. But that's not who you are."
She looked confused, her brow furrowing. "What do you mean?"
I smiled again, stepping just a little closer, closing the distance between us.
"You're not meant to live a quiet life, Mariana. You're meant for more."
