He reached into his pocket and pulled out another envelope, this one black like the last.

He held it out to me, his eyes steady on mine.

"What's this?" I asked, my hands trembling as I took it.

"Open it when you're ready," he said quietly, stepping back. "But know that once you do, there's no going back."

I stared at the envelope, my mind racing.

I didn't know what to do.

Part of me wanted to throw it away, to walk out of that room and never look back.

But another part—the part that had brought me here in the first place—was curious.

I wanted to know more, even if it scared me.

I looked up at him, my heart in my throat.
