The Kapre is a well-known figure in Filipino folklore, often described as a giant tree-dwelling creature. This urban legend has deep roots in the Philippines, blending indigenous beliefs with later Spanish influences. The Kapre is both feared and respected, and there are many rural and urban stories about encounters with this mysterious being.

The Kapre is typically depicted as a large, muscular giant, standing 7 to 9 feet tall. It is often described as having dark skin, thick hair, and a distinct odor of tobacco or burnt wood.

A Kapre is usually found sitting in large trees, particularly balete trees (often considered magical in Filipino culture) or old acacia trees. It is said to sit up there smoking a large cigar, the embers of which can sometimes be seen glowing in the dark.

The Kapre is believed to be a nocturnal being, usually making itself known during twilight or late into the night.

Unlike other mythical creatures in Filipino folklore, such as the Aswang or Manananggal, which are often malicious and dangerous, the Kapre is usually considered a mischievous but relatively harmless creature. It doesn't actively harm humans but enjoys playing tricks on them, especially by making them lose their way in the forest or become disoriented when walking at night.

The Kapre is sometimes believed to be a guardian spirit of the forest or a particular tree. People who disrespect or harm the Kapre's tree may experience bad luck or misfortune.

One of Kapre's abilities is the power to remain invisible, though some say children and people with a special "third eye" can see them. If someone becomes too curious or tries to invade its territory, the Kapre may reveal itself briefly to scare them off.

There are also legends where the Kapre falls in love with a human woman. In these stories, the Kapre watches over the woman, protects her, and may even try to befriend or court her.

Many Filipinos, especially in rural areas, believe that if you hear the sound of a large tree rustling without any wind, or if you smell strong tobacco smoke in the middle of the forest, it may be a Kapre nearby.

One common prank attributed to the Kapre is making people's belongings disappear, only for them to reappear later in unusual places.

There's a strong belief that if you get lost in the forest, it might be the work of a Kapre playing tricks on you. To escape the Kapre's influence, it's suggested to take your shirt off and wear it inside out, which is said to break the creature's hold on you.
