After San and Wooyoung returned to the table with menus in hand, the conversation continued to flow easily between them. Wooyoung was chatting animatedly, making both Yeosang and San laugh as he recounted a story from his morning class. But even as the moment felt light, Yeosang's mind was elsewhere, still circling around Hana's warning.
He glanced at San between sips of his iced coffee, wondering if he should say something. Part of him wanted to ask, to get it off his chest, but he wasn't sure how to bring it up. What if it made things awkward? What if San reacted badly? He didn't want to make their friendship uncomfortable, especially since it was so new. But Hana's words were nagging at him, and he couldn't let them go.
Finally, as Wooyoung took a break from talking to scroll through his phone, Yeosang took a deep breath and decided to ask. He kept his voice as casual as he could manage. "Hey, San... I met someone in class earlier. Hana."
San, who had been sipping his drink, froze for a fraction of a second. His smile faltered briefly before he quickly recovered. "Oh... Hana?"
"Yeah," Yeosang said, feeling the tension immediately. "She said you two dated."
San scratched the back of his neck, his expression shifting ever so slightly. It was a nervous gesture, one Yeosang hadn't seen from him before. "Uh, yeah. We did. A while back, though. It wasn't a big deal."
Yeosang nodded slowly, though the unease in his chest grew. San was trying to act like it didn't bother him, but Yeosang could see through the cracks in his calm demeanor. The casual smile, the way he leaned back in his chair, all of it felt just a little forced. Like he was playing it off.
"She didn't seem... too happy about it," Yeosang said carefully, not wanting to give away what Hana had actually said but also testing San's reaction.
San's smile tightened, but he kept it in place. "Yeah, well, breakups are never easy, right? We just weren't a good match, I guess." He shrugged, as if it was no big deal, but Yeosang could see the tension in his eyes.
There was something about the way San was brushing it off that made Yeosang feel even more uneasy. He hadn't expected San to act so nervous, to overplay it like this. It was as if there was more to the story than he was letting on. Yeosang felt that familiar discomfort return, the confusion stirring up again. He wasn't sure if San was being completely honest with him.
Before Yeosang could say anything else, Wooyoung jumped back into the conversation, oblivious to the shift in atmosphere. "Wait, what are you guys talking about?" he asked, looking between them curiously.
"Nothing much," San said quickly, forcing a grin. "Just an ex."
Wooyoung raised his eyebrows, smirking. "Ohhh, juicy. Which ex?"
"Hana," San replied, but there was a tightness in his voice that Wooyoung didn't seem to catch.
"Ah, that one," Wooyoung said, laughing it off. "Well, better her than that other girl you were seeing for like a week. What was her name again?"
San rolled his eyes, clearly trying to move the conversation along. "Can we not?"
Wooyoung just chuckled, clearly finding it all amusing. Yeosang, on the other hand, felt a clench in his chest that Woo already knew about everything while he had to ask and couldn't shake the uneasy feeling sitting in his stomach. Something about this whole thing felt off, and he didn't know what to do with that feeling.
San glanced over at Yeosang, catching his eye for a brief moment, and his smile softened slightly, as if he was trying to reassure him. "It's all in the past, though. Don't worry about it."
