Chapter 51

    Neuvillette never thought that once in his everlasting life would he ever find a lover, nor a child to care for. Never considered the idea, or even allowed himself to day dream about his. He knew well that any friendships, let alone marriages or familial ties would only hinder his capability to perform as an Iudex, and considering that he held the fate of the Nation in his hands now after Focalors' death, respect was a necessity for him. He couldn't charge his child non-guilty if they had committed a minor crime of stealing, or maybe even a larger one such as murder.  

Yet here he was, a thousand year old Dragon Sovereign, holding a small baby in his hands and cooing to her. Whether or not he cared, Lucille definitely didn't mind, her little palms coming up to tug at his hair, jabot, even cup his face and babble incoherent words and the occasional 'Mama!' up at him. The Chief Justice may be stoic, but even he wasn't immune to such affections.

Even now, as he sat in his chair and worked, he couldn't help but miss his daughter's presence. After a reasonably calm exchange, Neuvillette and Wriothesley had come to the agreement that as both her 'parents', they would take turns having her. The Iudex wasn't privy to such matters, he had handled countless custody and divorce cases before. Only thing that made this one different was that they weren't divorced, they'd have to be married in the first place. How silly.

His eyes caught onto a certain Steambird edition as he was filling out paperwork, a rather large stack for even himself, considering he hadn't been focusing on his duties and priorities as Chief Justice. With a curious periwinkle gaze, he picked up the press and read the first few headlines.
