"He's coming," Luke said, sounding concerned as what looked to be a tornado forming. Luke pushed Marnie and Maisie to hide behind a hay bale to see what was going on.
The Evil Warlock appeared on the City Hall overhang. He started addressing all of Halloweentown, "My fellow creatures! Your moment of destiny has arrived! I offer you the chance to return to our days of glory! To end this exile from the mortal world, which the humans have stolen from us! Follow me, my fellow citizens of Halloweentown! Too long have we been exiled to this second-class world! Forced to live in this, Halloweentown!"
"I have to install the talisman before it's too late," Maisie said, holding up the talisman.
"No," Luke said, sounding and radiating concern. "He'll see you and you'll end up just like the others."
"That's called a decoy," Maisie said. "It's what we do in soccer. Someone pretends to have the soccer ball to get the other school's attention, while a different girl actually has the ball to be able to score points."
"Good idea," Marnie told her.
"To celebrate the evil within us," the Evil Warlock was saying. "To reveal ourselves as we really are." He used his magic to reveal who he really was...Calabar.
"Calabar," Marnie said in shock.
"I knew he was being deceitful," Maisie said, angry at how he tricked everyone. "I felt it all along. I'm glad I never trusted him."
Luke looked at Maisie questioningly, "Felt?"
"Follow me!" yelled Calabar. "And together we will reclaim the Mortal World which is rightfully ours!"
The thing was, Luke didn't seem at all surprised by Calabar's reveal.
Maisie looked at Luke, "You knew Calabar was evil?"
"Look," Luke started. "I made an awful mistake. So, let me try and make up for it." He really seemed sincere in that. "It's our only chance."
Marnie looked at Luke and then looked at Maisie, "Mai?"
"He's being honest about wanting to try," Maisie told Marnie. Luke looked at Maisie even more confused. Maisie looked at him, "I have empathy."
Marnie told Luke and Maisie of her plan. She handed Luke the red cloak.
"But before we can be sure of success, we must find the ones who would stop us," Calabar exclaimed. "The ones who are half-human!"
Maisie felt a pang of fear at that because he was talking about her and her siblings, but she had to be brave for the plan to work.
While Luke put on the red cloak and covered himself fully with the cloak, Marnie and Maisie slipped away to head to the jack o' lantern.
Just as planned, Calabar bought the decoy, thinking that Marnie was under the cloak.
"Oh, young Cromwell," Calabar chided, delighted in spotting his prey, who continued on. He sounded amused as he spoke, "You thought you could hide from me? What? No sister?" He ordered, "Stop! Give me the talisman!" The red cloak started rushing for the jack 'o lantern statue. Calabar ordered much louder, "I said stop! Give me the talisman!"
Maisie watched in horror as Calabar lifted up from the city hall sign and down to the ground below. He pointed at the red cloak, "How dare you disobey me?" He sounded a bit like a disappointed parent, but as far as Maisie knew, he didn't have kids.
Did he?
Nah. Calabar was probably too busy plotting his evil plans to even have kids. Besides, who would Calabar have a child with?
