Maisie walked in the kitchen, "Excuse me," she said to the man and the kid in the definitely fake leather blazer.
The man stepped, "Oh, sorry."
Maisie went over to stand beside Marnie.
"Hi, I'm Alex," the man said. "This is my son, Kal." Gwen smiled. "We just moved in down the street, and we heard about your party."
"Oh, welcome to the neighborhood," Gwen replied. "I'm Gwen and these are my daughters, Marnie and Maisie."
Alex looked at the two teens, "Hi."
Maisie was trying to figure out what was in the galloons Alex was holding, "Hi." She was pretty sure it was ice cream. And she was pretty sure that she was feeling the attraction Alex and Gwen were starting to feel towards each other.
She looked at Kal, who had eyes for Marnie.
Kal told Marnie, "If all witches were as pretty as you, they'd have a better reputation."
Honestly, that was kind of smooth. It made Maisie wish Jason would flirt with her like that, but Jason clearly didn't like her back.
The same went for Jack when she was thirteen. He wasn't interested.
Maisie can tell that Marnie was a bit flustered at the flirtation. So, Maisie nudged Marnie, who said, "Oh. Thanks."
She can feel the awkwardness and she didn't need the empathy to sense it.
Maisie looked at Alex, "Do you want me to put the ice cream in the freezer for you?" She had to duck under Marnie's arm as she took off the witch's hat and set it on the counter.
"Oh," Alex said, looking away from Gwen. "Whatever you want. They're for your mom. Uh, for the party."
Maisie took one galloon and Gwen took the other, and then proceeded to take the ice cream from Maisie.
"I hope you like lime," Alex said. "Green's my favorite color."
"Okay," Gwen said, feeling a little confused.
"I-is the rest of your family coming too?" asked Gwen.
"Oh, it's just me and Kal," Alex said.
Gwen nodded, "Oh, well, lime is good." She held up the ice cream.
"Good," Alex replied.
"I've got some scoops over here," Gwen said.
"Let me help you," Alex replied, going to help her.
Marnie and Kal were smiling at each other.
And Maisie considered showing herself out.
Thankfully Cindy, one of Marnie's friends, came by, hissing by Marnie's ear. She walked away and Marnie thumbed back at Cindy, "That's Cindy."
Other guests came into the kitchen.
Kal looked like he tried not to laugh, "Yeah." He looked at Marnie, "It's a little crowded in here. You wanna give me a tour?"
Marnie said, "Uh, sure." She pointed, "Let's go this way." They walked away and Maisie moved out of the way so a girl can get to a cupcake.
She went to the living room trying to find Kimberly.
Maisie eventually found Kimberly. "Bad news. New guy is into my sister. Sorry."
Kimberly shrugged, "It's fine. That's what usually happens to us."
Maisie was confused, "What do you mean?"
"We're the ones that people don't fall for," Kimberly replied. "It's okay. We'll just have to go the Halloween dance at the school by ourselves."
Maisie noticed how Dylan seemed to try and flirt with Cindy, but she must've shot him down because she and her friends walked away laughing from Dylan.
"I'll be right back," Maisie said, she went to Dylan and grabbed his arm. She can feel how hurt he was, "Don't worry, Dylan. It gets easier."
Dylan looked down at her, "Don't worry about it."
"I get turned down too, don't worry," Maisie replied. "It happens. Come on, I'll take you to get some ice cream."
"No, I'm fine," Dylan replied. The last thing he needed was for people to see him hanging around his older sister.
"My friend, Kim, doesn't have a date to the school dance," Maisie pointed out. "You, me, and her can go together."
"That's even worse," Dylan replied.
Maisie said, "Well, how about you two go together?"
"No, I'm fine," replied Dylan.
Maisie replied, "Well, fine, consider this the last time I tried to help you get a girlfriend."
"What are you talking about?" Dylan continued, "This was the only time you tried to help me get a girlfriend."
"Then never again," Maisie replied. She headed for the kitchens.
"You know, Mai," Dylan called after her. Maisie turned to look back at him, "I think I'll take the ice cream."
Maisie smiled at him, "Sure." She went to the kitchen, "Two, please. One for me and one for Dylan."
Gwen gave Maisie a look, because she heard that one before, and then proceeded to see Maisie eating the ice cream that she supposedly got for Dylan.
"Honest," Maisie replied. "You can even follow me if you want."
Gwen scooped some ice cream into a bowl for Maisie to take and Alex handed another bowl to Maisie, for Dylan.
Gwen handed a bowl to Kal, who handed it to Marnie.
"Oh, thanks," Marnie said, surprised.
"Do you want some, son?" Alex asked Kal.
"Actually, I think I'm gonna head home, Dad," Kal replied.
Maisie felt the disappointment roll off of Marnie.
"I think I'll stay around and help out," Alex said. He added, "If that's okay."
"Oh, I never turn down help," Gwen replied.
"Hey, Marnie," Kal started, "I'm not enrolled yet, but I hear there's this really big costume party at the school. I figured if my costume's good enough, maybe I could crash it."
"Well, let's see," Marnie started. "If you went with a student who is enrolled, then maybe you wouldn't have to crash it."
Kal smiled, "Pick you up in an hour?"
"Yeah, sure," Marnie replied. Kal turned around and Marnie looked at Maisie, and whispered excitedly, "Yes."
Maisie smiled, though she felt awkward watching the whole thing go down.
Kal turned around and handed a rose to Marnie. "Meeting you is everything I hoped to be." He walked away and Maisie felt like that was one of the strangest things she had ever seen. That also felt a little ominous.
Where did the rose come from, she wondered as Marnie inhaled the rose.
Aggie and Sophie came in and looked around the kitchen.
"I don't see anyone," Aggie whispered.
Sophie shrugged and they walked out. Maisie went to hand Dylan the bowl. "Here, ice cream. Did Grandma and Sophie seem off to you?"
"They're always weird to me," Dylan replied, taking the bowl of ice cream.
