"You bet our magic?" asked Aggie.

"A figure of speech," Marnie replied. "I thought it was just – I'm sorry. I'm sorry."

Aggie pointed at Gwen, "This is all your fault."

"What?" Gwen asked, "How is this my fault?"

"If Marnie and Maisie had been properly trained, they wouldn't have ever said anything like that," Aggie told Gwen.

Gwen said, "If Marnie and Maisie had been raised the way I wanted them to be raised—"

"Then the world was doomed to begin with," Maisie cut in. "Calabar would've succeeded in his plot to take over the world and we wouldn't have been any wiser. He and his annoying gnat of a son would be annoying everyone right about now if they got their way. Who knows how long it would've taken before someone got sick of them and tried to oppose them."

Sophie said, "She's got a point. Grandma could've been turned into a statue, and we wouldn't have noticed."

"Look," Marnie cut in. "Let's just cancel the program. I mean, nothing could go wrong if no one comes to live with us."

"Chances are, they already made flyers," Maisie said. "And someone probably signed up for it."

"Aw, and I was so looking forward to sharing my room with a werewolf," Dylan replied sarcastically.

Marnie smacked Dylan upside the head for that.

"No, this is too important," Aggie replied. "We have to show people that they have nothing to be afraid of."

"Besides," Dylan said. "We have nothing to worry about. There aren't any knights."

"Well, of course not," Gwen said. "It's just a story parents in Halloweentown tell their kids to scare them. It's like...the boogeyman."

"Oh," Aggie said. "He's back in Halloweentown. He's been asking about you."

Maisie was confused.

"For the ten-thousandth time, Mother, no," Gwen replied.

"There really is a boogeyman?" asked Sophie.

"And apparently he has a thing for Mom," Dylan said.

Maisie smiled, because it must be nice having someone have a crush on you. She wouldn't know. The guys she liked didn't like her back.

"One date," Gwen defended herself.

Sophie asked, "But you're sure there aren't any knights?"

"Yes," Marnie reassured Sophie. "We're absolutely sure there aren't any knights."

"Grasshopper Flakes?" asked Dylan, "Who eats honey-flavored Grasshopper Flakes?"

Maisie almost rolled her eyes at Dylan, but she went into the kitchen, setting her backpack down on a bar stool.
