********************************Ana's lounge is like stepping into a different world. Soft, caramel tones and white linens drape everything from the enormous bed to the windows. The air smells faintly of vanilla, luxurious, calming, almost at odds with the mess of thoughts swarming in my head. As I sink into the plush sofa, I glance around, feeling like I'm in some princess's palace. It's beautiful, so different from the dark tension and memories still clinging to my mind from last night.
Ana's voice pulls me back to the present. "Champagne?" she offers, already pouring two glasses from the bottle resting in an ice bucket.
Well, it won't help me, but it also won't kill me, so...
I force a smile and nod, accepting the crystal glass she hands me. The bubbly liquid fizzes gently, but all I can think of is what I need to tell her. She doesn't know that I can't leave with her. Doesn't know it was all just a sick joke...
"Babe you look fire in that dress," she flicks her eyebrows at me, sipping her champagne.
"Thanks," I murmur, running my fingers over the hem of my pink summer dress. It is cute. "You sure look sexy in that Chanel." I wink.
She smiles, taking another sip and I decide to just rip off the bandage and tell her the truth.
"Ana... I found out that I'm not going to be able to leave with you and Mateo." Thank God, man gives me creeeeeps.
Her glass hovers near her lips, and for a moment, her expression freezes. She sets it down carefully, eyes wide. "What? Why the hell not?" She interrogates.
I exhale slowly, trying to keep my tone calm, nervously playing with a strand of my hair. "Your brother is not letting me go." I hesitate, not wanting to reveal the whole story. Not about the trick he pulled, not about the darker things. Ana doesn't know about me and him, and it has to stay that way. "I don't know why. I'm just a maid. Who knows what goes on in that man's head?" I force a chuckle.
Her face falls, her disappointment clear. "But... he said he'll sell you, he made a deal with Mateo. Everything was arranged, I don't understand." She shakes her head, slamming the glass on the table in frustration. "What a fucking dick! What the hell is his problem?!" Pulling at her soft locks in frustration.
"It's okay, babe. I'm oka-"
"I'm so sorry." She cuts me off, her green eyes glistening with unshed tears. "I thought-I thought he would let you go. I wanted to set you free, and now... he just has to ruin everything. I'm so sorry, Cali." She sobs.
Ana rarely cries, which makes this conversation a whole lot harder. I shake my head, trying to comfort her. "Babe, it's not your fault."
She looks down, playing with the edge of her bracelet. "But it is. And what the fuck am I supposed to do now, huh?" She scoffs, forcing a chuckle whilst running her hand through her hair. "I mean, I only agreed into marrying him because of y- ehm, never mind." She shakes it off.
I blink. "What?"
She fakes another smile, dismissively waving her hand. "Nothing, doesn't matter. Do you want a refill-" trying to change the subject, before I cut her off.
"Did you just say that you wanted to marry him only because of me? Ana what the hell?" I groan, doing a face palm. Unbelievable.
"I have everything under control." She assures.
"Bullshit! Ana, no-no, you-you can't marry him now. You need to call if off. God, why would you do something so stupid-"
"I promised you, didn't I?" She stares at me. Then she huffs, her eyes narrowing slightly. "I know I screwed up. Believe me, I know. Do you think I actually like this man?" She laughs bitterly. "Sure, he's good-looking and rich, but the man gives me creeps. I mean, ever since he came here, he's acting so... weird."
