Realization
Billie sat quietly on the couch, her mind buzzing with everything Finneas had told her about Y/N’s past. She felt a mix of emotions—sadness, worry, and an overwhelming need to be there for Y/N in ways she hadn’t realized before. There was so much she hadn’t known, but now that she did, it all made sense: Y/N’s distant behavior, the nightmares, the way she seemed to struggle with her emotions.
And yet, despite all of that, Billie couldn’t ignore the other feelings swirling inside her. She wasn’t sure when it had started, but over the past few weeks, she had found herself thinking about Y/N more often. It was more than just friendship. She cared deeply for her, in ways that were starting to feel less platonic with each passing day.
As she sat there, lost in thought, Finneas came back downstairs. He had managed to calm Y/N down after her nightmare, and she had finally fallen back asleep, exhausted from the emotional toll the day had taken.
"She’s okay now," Finneas said softly, sitting down next to Billie. "At least for tonight."
Billie nodded, her eyes distant as she stared at the floor. She was still thinking about Y/N, about how fragile she seemed at times, and how much she wanted to protect her from the pain that kept creeping into her life.
"Finneas," Billie began hesitantly, her voice soft. "I think… I think I’m in love with her."
Finneas didn’t seem surprised. In fact, he gave a small, knowing smile and leaned back against the couch, crossing his arms. "Yeah, I kind of figured."
Billie’s eyes widened slightly. "You did?"
Finneas chuckled softly, shaking his head. "Billie, it’s been pretty obvious. The way you look at her, the way you always want to be around her… you’re not exactly subtle."
Billie blushed, feeling a bit embarrassed. She hadn’t realized she’d been so transparent. "I didn’t even notice… I mean, I’ve never felt like this before. Not like this."
Finneas nodded, his smile softening. "It’s different with her, isn’t it?"
Billie bit her lip, nodding slowly. "Yeah. It is."
There was a moment of silence between them before Billie spoke again, her voice quieter this time. "I don’t even know if she feels the same. I mean, she’s been through so much… and I don’t want to make things harder for her."
Finneas gave her a thoughtful look. "You might be surprised. Y/N isn’t great with words, but she’s been giving you hints, Billie."
Billie frowned slightly, confused. "Hints?"
Finneas nodded. "Yeah, little things. She’s not the type to be bold or straightforward, especially with how she feels. But I’ve noticed the way she acts around you. She’s different when you’re around."
Billie looked at him, intrigued but also a bit skeptical. "Different how?"
Finneas leaned forward, resting his elbows on his knees. "She’s more relaxed when you’re near her, even if she’s not saying much. And she leans into your hugs in a way she doesn’t with anyone else. I’ve seen her try to make small gestures, like sitting closer to you or giving you those lingering glances when she thinks you’re not looking. She’s trying, in her own way, to show you how she feels. But you’ve got to remember, she’s been through so much, and she’s not used to being vulnerable like that."
Billie’s heart skipped a beat as she listened to Finneas. She hadn’t noticed any of these things before, or at least, she hadn’t realized they meant something more. Y/N was always so subtle, so quiet with her emotions, and it had been hard for Billie to see past the walls she had built up. But now, hearing Finneas explain it, it started to make sense.
"She really does that?" Billie asked softly, her voice laced with disbelief. She hadn’t thought Y/N was even capable of flirting or showing interest, not in the traditional sense.
"She does," Finneas confirmed, his expression serious. "But like I said, it’s easy to miss because she’s not like most people. She doesn’t throw herself at you or say things outright. It’s all in the little things. And I think she’s scared, too. Scared of what might happen if she lets herself get too close."
Billie felt her chest tighten. She could understand that fear. Y/N had been hurt before—by life, by people, by the weight of her past. It made sense that she would be hesitant to open up, even if she did have feelings for Billie.
"I don’t want to push her," Billie said quietly, her voice full of concern. "I don’t want to make things worse for her."
"You won’t," Finneas reassured her. "You just have to be patient with her. Let her come to you in her own time. She’s already starting to trust you, and that’s a big deal for someone like her."
Billie nodded, her mind racing with everything Finneas had said. She thought back to the moments they had shared—those quiet, tender moments where Y/N would sit a little closer, or when she would hold onto Billie’s hand just a bit longer than necessary. She had always thought Y/N was just being shy or reserved, but now she realized there was more to it.
"Do you really think she could feel the same way?" Billie asked, her voice laced with uncertainty.
Finneas smiled softly, giving her a reassuring nod. "I do. I’ve seen the way she looks at you, Billie. It’s different. You make her feel safe, and that’s something she doesn’t take lightly."
Billie’s heart swelled at his words, a warmth spreading through her chest. She had always cared deeply for Y/N, but now, knowing that Y/N might feel the same way, she felt a glimmer of hope—a hope that maybe, just maybe, they could be something more.
"Thanks, Finneas," Billie said softly, her voice full of gratitude.
Finneas smiled at her, a knowing look in his eyes. "Anytime. Just remember, Billie—be patient with her. She’s worth it."
Billie nodded, her mind made up. She wasn’t going to rush things, but she was going to pay closer attention to Y/N’s little gestures, those small hints that Finneas had pointed out. And most importantly, she was going to be there for her, no matter what.
As they sat in the quiet of the living room, Billie’s thoughts drifted back to Y/N, asleep upstairs. She thought about how strong she was, despite everything she had been through. And she knew, without a doubt, that she loved her—not just because of the feelings she had, but because Y/N deserved to be loved in the way she had been deprived of for so long.
Billie glanced at Finneas, a soft smile tugging at her lips. "You know… you’re pretty good at this whole advice thing."
Finneas chuckled, leaning back against the couch. "I have my moments."
Billie smiled to herself, feeling a sense of peace settle over her. Whatever happened next, she knew she was ready. Ready to be there for Y/N, to help her heal, and maybe—just maybe—to show her how much she meant to her.
And if Y/N felt the same way, Billie would be ready for that, too.
