The Song Takes Shape

The soft glow of the late afternoon sun filtered through the window, casting warm light across the room. Y/N and Billie had finally settled into a comfortable rhythm after their movie night, and now they sat cross-legged on the floor, surrounded by notebooks, pens, and scattered lyrics. Finneas had gone to grab some snacks, leaving the two of them alone for a bit.

Billie flipped through one of the notebooks, trying to find the right inspiration for the song they’d been working on. She glanced over at Y/N, who seemed a little quieter than before, her eyes slightly drooping as she leaned back against the couch. Y/N had been so lively and full of hints just moments ago, but now she looked exhausted, the light in her eyes dimming just a bit.

"Hey," Billie said softly, setting the notebook down. "You okay?"

Y/N blinked slowly, her mind racing to catch up. She nodded, but it was a slow, hesitant motion. "Just a little tired," she admitted, her voice barely above a whisper. The energy that had filled the room before was starting to ebb away, and Y/N felt it tugging at her.

Billie frowned slightly, concern washing over her. She could tell that Y/N was struggling to keep her usual demeanor, the small hints of emotion she often showed now buried beneath fatigue. "You don’t have to push yourself, you know. We can take a break," Billie offered, her voice gentle.

Y/N appreciated Billie’s concern, but she didn’t want to hold them back. "No, I want to finish the song," she insisted, her determination shining through for just a moment. But as soon as she spoke, the weariness returned, and she felt the weight of her exhaustion creeping in again. "I just… might need a little help."

Billie smiled, a spark of warmth spreading through her chest. "Of course. We’re a team, remember?" She reached over and gently squeezed Y/N’s hand, grounding her in the moment. "Let’s brainstorm some song names. We’ve got the lyrics down, and we need something that captures the vibe."

Y/N nodded slowly, appreciating the warmth of Billie’s hand around hers. "Okay," she said, trying to rally her thoughts. But every idea felt heavy, as if they were lost in a fog that she couldn’t shake. "How about… ‘Finding Light’?" she suggested, her voice barely above a whisper.

Billie’s expression lit up. "I like that! It feels hopeful." She jotted it down, glancing at Y/N with a smile. "What else do you think?"

Y/N hesitated, struggling to push through her exhaustion. "Um…" She thought hard, but her mind felt clouded, and she couldn’t seem to find the words. The hints she had once been able to express were buried deep beneath layers of tiredness, and she felt like she was wading through thick mud.

Seeing the struggle on Y/N’s face, Billie shifted closer, her presence warm and comforting. "You don’t have to come up with everything right now," Billie reassured her, tilting her head slightly to catch Y/N’s gaze. "We can just talk it out. What do you feel when you think about the song?"

Y/N took a deep breath, her chest tightening slightly as she searched for a way to articulate her emotions. "It feels… like hope. Like trying to find your way out of darkness," she finally said, though the words felt shaky and fragile.

Billie’s heart swelled at Y/N’s insight. "That’s beautiful. ‘Finding Light’ really captures that," she said, scribbling it down with enthusiasm. She glanced back at Y/N, noticing the small furrow of concentration on her brow. "What else? We can brainstorm together."

Y/N tried to focus, but every time she thought she had a grasp on an idea, it slipped away like water through her fingers. She could feel the fatigue tugging at her, and she fought against it, wanting to contribute but finding it hard to express herself. "Maybe… ‘Fading Shadows’?" she suggested weakly.

"Yes! That’s amazing!" Billie exclaimed, her excitement radiating. She could see how hard Y/N was trying and appreciated the effort. "It perfectly represents the struggle of overcoming what’s holding you back."

Y/N smiled faintly at the praise, feeling a little warmth bloom in her chest despite her exhaustion. She loved how Billie always found the light in everything, even when it was hard to see herself. But the fatigue kept creeping back in, and Y/N felt like she was fading, caught between wanting to keep contributing and needing to rest.

"How about we take a quick break?" Billie suggested gently, her tone shifting to one of concern. "You’ve been working really hard, and I can tell you’re tired."

Y/N nodded slowly, her body relaxing slightly as she leaned back against the couch. "I think I just need a minute," she admitted, grateful for the reprieve.

Billie moved closer, sitting beside Y/N and wrapping her arm around her shoulders. "I’m here, okay?" she said softly. "We don’t have to rush this. I want you to feel good about the song."

Y/N leaned into Billie’s warmth, feeling the tension in her shoulders ease just a bit. "Thank you," she whispered, her eyes fluttering closed for a moment. The closeness was soothing, and she felt safe in Billie’s embrace.

As they sat together in silence, Y/N could feel her eyelids growing heavier. She wanted to push through, to give her all, but the exhaustion was pulling her under like a tide. "You’re really good at this, you know," she mumbled sleepily, leaning her head against Billie’s shoulder.

Billie smiled softly, glancing down at Y/N with affection. "I just want you to shine," she replied, her voice low and comforting. "You’ve got so much to offer, even when you don’t see it yourself."

Y/N felt her heart swell at Billie’s words, but the weight of exhaustion pressed down on her. "I wish I could express it better," she murmured, her voice trailing off as she succumbed to the drowsiness that enveloped her.

"You do more than you know," Billie reassured her, gently stroking Y/N’s hair as she nestled closer. "Just being you is enough."

Y/N felt her eyes flutter closed, the sound of Billie’s voice lulling her into a peaceful state. In that moment, she found solace in the knowledge that she didn’t have to be perfect—just being herself was enough. With Billie by her side, she felt a sense of belonging, one she had been searching for all along.

In the warmth of Billie’s embrace, Y/N allowed herself to drift off, feeling safe and cherished, knowing that even in her quietest moments, she was seen. And for now, that was everything.
