A New Realization
The movie ended, and the room was quiet except for the soft hum of the credits rolling. Y/N was still nestled against Billie, feeling calmer than she had in a long time. Billie’s arm was still wrapped around her, and the warmth between them felt almost tangible. Y/N didn’t move, content to stay right where she was, but she knew that the moment wouldn’t last forever.
Finneas, sitting comfortably on the other end of the couch, broke the silence first. "That was a good choice of movie," he said, stretching a little, but his gaze was clearly focused on Billie and Y/N. His smirk, though subtle, didn’t go unnoticed.
Billie raised an eyebrow at him, picking up on the look he was giving them. "What?" she asked, half-amused, half-curious.
Finneas shrugged, trying to play it cool, but there was a knowing gleam in his eyes. "Oh, nothing," he said casually, but then after a beat, he added, "Just... you two would make a good couple, that’s all."
Billie blinked, her face warming as Finneas’ words sank in. She glanced down at Y/N, who had gone still in her arms, and then back at Finneas. "What makes you say that?" Billie asked, her voice light but tinged with a hint of nervousness.
Y/N, meanwhile, felt her heart race. She didn’t pull away from Billie, but she could feel the tension in her chest building. Finneas had always had a way of saying things so casually, yet so full of meaning. He always seemed to know things about her that she hadn’t even fully realized herself.
Finneas smiled knowingly, leaning back into the couch as if he had all the time in the world. "Oh, you know... the way you two act around each other," he said, his tone teasing but not unkind. "It’s obvious to anyone paying attention."
Billie laughed softly, though there was a nervous edge to it. "Obvious, huh?"
Y/N felt like she was holding her breath, unsure of what to say. She wasn’t good with words, and this situation was one that made her feel vulnerable in a way she hadn’t expected. Did Billie feel the same? Was Finneas just teasing, or did he really see something between them?
Finneas noticed the shift in the room and, sensing Y/N’s hesitation, decided to ease up a little. "I’m just saying," he continued, his voice softer now, "you two are good for each other. I’ve seen how Y/N acts differently around you, Billie. She’s more comfortable, even when she’s not saying much. And Billie... you light up around her. It’s not hard to see."
Billie looked down at Y/N, her expression softening. "Is that true?" she asked quietly, her voice barely above a whisper.
Y/N swallowed hard, her eyes meeting Billie’s for a brief moment before she looked away. She didn’t know how to put her feelings into words—she never did—but she also didn’t want to hide them anymore. Maybe Finneas was right. Maybe it was obvious to everyone but her.
"Maybe..." Y/N said, her voice small but sincere. "I don’t know how to... say it, but... yeah."
Billie’s heart skipped a beat at Y/N’s admission. It wasn’t a full confession, but for Y/N, that was huge. She knew how hard it was for Y/N to express herself, and even these few words felt monumental.
Finneas smiled at the exchange, feeling proud of both of them for being open, even in their own quiet ways. He leaned forward, his expression softening. "I’ve always thought you two had something special. You’ve helped each other in ways I never could, and honestly, it’s just nice to see you both happy."
Y/N’s face flushed a little at Finneas’ words, but she didn’t pull away from Billie. Instead, she stayed close, finding comfort in the warmth between them. She was bad with words, and she wasn’t sure how to handle the weight of what Finneas was saying, but she trusted him. And maybe he was right.
Billie’s hand gently squeezed Y/N’s arm, a silent reassurance. She looked at Finneas, her expression serious but filled with affection. "You’ve always been good at reading people, Finn," she said softly. "Maybe you’re onto something."
Finneas chuckled, leaning back again, satisfied with his observation. "I usually am."
Y/N, still quiet, glanced up at Billie. There was something different in the way they looked at each other now, like the air between them had shifted. It wasn’t uncomfortable, but it was new, a little more raw, a little more real.
Billie smiled, her eyes never leaving Y/N’s. "We’ll figure it out, okay?" she whispered, her voice gentle.
Y/N nodded, her heart feeling lighter than it had in a long time. Maybe they would. Maybe this was the beginning of something she hadn’t been ready to face before. And for once, that thought didn’t scare her—it gave her hope.
