After a few days in the hospital, Xing returned home, relieved to be back at the orphanage. The late afternoon sun cast long shadows across the grounds, illuminating the faces of the children as they played. Gael, always the most adventurous of the group, had taken to exploring the corners of the property, his curiosity leading him to the edges of the dense woods bordering the orphanage. It was there, hidden behind a thicket of trees, that he stumbled upon an unsettling scene.

Gael had always been perceptive, a trait that often got him into trouble. He crouched low, barely breathing as he listened to the hushed voices of two men. One was Xian, his beloved guardian; the other was Rafael—a man whose presence had begun to weigh heavily on the orphanage like a dark cloud.

“You can’t just come here and threaten me, Rafael,” Xian's voice trembled, barely concealing his fear. “I won’t let you do as you want in this orphanage.”

Rafael’s reply was laced with malice, his tone low and menacing. “If you want to keep this place running, you’ll do as I say. I can make life very difficult for you, Xian. Don’t forget who holds the power here.”

Gael felt a surge of anger course through him. Rafael's threats were unacceptable, and his protectiveness for Xian sparked a fierce determination within him. With a deep breath, he stood and stepped out from behind the trees, confronting Rafael with defiance written all over his face.

“Why don’t you pick on someone your own size?” Gael spat, his voice steady despite the fear gnawing at him. “You think you can just bully us? You have no right to come here and threaten my papa!”

Rafael turned slowly, a sinister smile curling on his lips as he sized up the teenager. “Ah, the brave little Gael. You really shouldn’t have come here. This isn’t a game you want to play.”

Xian’s eyes widened in horror. “Gael, no! You need to go back inside!” he pleaded, fear evident in his voice.

“Stay out of this, Xian,” Rafael snapped, stepping closer to Gael, his expression darkening. “You’ve taught him well—this one thinks he can stand up to me. How cute.”

“I’m not afraid of you,” Gael shot back, fists clenched at his sides. “You don’t scare me. We won’t let you hurt anyone!”

“Is that so?” Rafael leaned in, his voice dropping to a dangerous whisper. “You have no idea what I’m capable of.”

As Rafael’s temper flared, Gael felt a wave of dread wash over him. In an instant, Rafael’s demeanor shifted from calm to enraged. “You think you can just defy me?” He raised his hand, ready to strike.

“Stop!” Xian cried out, rushing forward, desperation etched on his face. “Please, Rafael. Don’t do this. He’s just a child.”

Gael’s heart raced as he watched the confrontation unfold, the world narrowing around him to the imminent threat Rafael posed. “Let him go,” Xian pleaded, stepping in front of Gael protectively. “You can’t hurt him. He’s done nothing wrong.”

Rafael’s eyes gleamed with anger and amusement. “You’re putting yourself in danger for a teenager who doesn’t know when to keep his mouth shut. How pathetic.”

The tension hung in the air, thick and suffocating. Gael felt trapped, caught between his guardian’s protective instincts and Rafael’s wrath. The danger was palpable, and he realized just how much was at stake.

“Enough!” Rafael snapped, his patience wearing thin. “I’ll deal with both of you. Don’t think I won’t.”

Xian’s desperation deepened, and he could see the shifting power dynamics between them. Rafael’s grip tightened around him, a reminder of how precarious their situation had become. “Please, just go,” Xian urged, his voice strained. “You don’t have to do this.”

But Rafael’s expression hardened, his resolve unyielding. “I’ll do whatever I want,” he hissed, his temper simmering just beneath the surface.

Realizing the imminent danger, Gael’s voice shook as he spoke up. “You won’t win. We’ll fight you every step of the way!”

Rafael’s eyes flashed with rage, and for a moment, it seemed as if he might lash out. But Xian, in a desperate attempt to protect Gael, stepped forward, his own safety forgotten in the face of Rafael’s threat.

“Don’t! I’ll do what you want. Just leave Gael alone!” Xian’s voice cracked, echoing the fear that gripped his heart.

As Rafael weighed his options, Gael felt the tension in the air shift again, uncertain of what the next moment would bring. He could see Xian's terror, and in that instant, he understood the delicate balance of power at play—the stakes were higher than he had ever imagined.
