The air was thick with tension as the aftermath of the battle settled. The ground was littered with broken branches, debris, and the remnants of a night stained by violence. The sky, once dark and foreboding, was beginning to lighten, but the weight of what had transpired lingered heavily over them all.
Alisha stood apart from the others as she and her siblings returned from their hiding place, her body rigid with unspoken anger. She had watched it all unfold—Rafael and Hanji’s brutal fight, the blood, the gunshots, and then the final moment when Rafael had pulled the trigger. It wasn’t just the violence that unsettled her; it was the way Rafael had thrown himself into the fray, risking his life for Xian and the rest of them. It was the same Rafael she had hated for so long, the man who had hurt Xian, yet here he was, protecting him with everything he had.
Her chest tightened with conflicting emotions—anger, confusion, and a strange sense of gratitude she wasn’t ready to acknowledge.
“Alisha, wait!” Morgana called out, her voice laced with concern. She rushed to her sister’s side, her brow furrowed. “You need to talk to us. Don’t shut us out.”
Renzo, still catching his breath from the chaos, joined them. “Yeah, Alisha. We’ve all been through a lot. You can’t just stand here alone,” he urged, glancing between her and the remnants of the battle.
Alisha shrugged them off, her gaze fixed on Rafael, who was bloodied and bruised, moving toward Xian, who was tending to Shawn. Her siblings’ voices faded into the background as she focused on the man who had caused so much pain. Rafael’s eyes briefly flicked to her, sensing the storm brewing inside her. For a moment, they locked eyes, and Alisha felt something snap inside her. She couldn’t hold it in any longer.
“Rafael!” she called out, her voice sharp and filled with resentment.
He stopped, turning to face her, his expression guarded. Xian glanced between them, but before he could intervene, Alisha stepped forward, her fists clenched at her sides.
“You think saving us now makes up for everything you’ve done?” she spat, her voice trembling with barely contained fury. “You think this one act erases all the pain you’ve caused? What you did to Papa?” Her words cut through the air like a knife, and Xian winced at the harshness in her tone.
“Alisha, please,” Morgana pleaded, stepping closer to her sister, concern etched across her face. “You don’t have to do this right now. We need to focus on healing, not fighting.”
“Yeah,” Renzo chimed in, his voice firm yet gentle. “Rafael might have hurt us in the past, but he just saved us tonight. Let’s not turn on each other when we need to stick together.”
Rafael’s face darkened, his usual calm exterior cracking for just a moment. He had been prepared for this—he knew that earning Alisha’s trust, or even her tolerance, would be an uphill battle. But facing her anger head-on was harder than he expected.
“I don’t expect anything from you, Alisha,” Rafael said quietly, his voice steady despite the tension. “I know what I’ve done. I know the hurt I caused Xian, and all of you. I’m not asking for forgiveness.”
Alisha took a step closer, her eyes blazing with emotion. “Then what do you want? Why are you still here? After everything, why do you keep coming back?”
For a moment, Rafael didn’t answer. His gaze shifted to Xian, who watched silently, his face etched with concern. Then he looked back at Alisha, his voice firm but with an underlying vulnerability.
“Because I love him,” Rafael said, his voice raw. “And I love all of you, even if you don’t believe it. I know I haven’t shown it in the right way, but I’m trying. I won’t run away from what I’ve done, but I won’t leave him, or any of you, either.”
Alisha’s throat tightened, her anger warring with the truth in Rafael’s words. She had seen him fight tonight—not just for Xian, but for all of them. And it scared her to admit that maybe, just maybe, he had changed. But the scars of the past were deep, and her heart wasn’t ready to let go of that anger just yet.
“You don’t get it, do you?” she whispered, her voice breaking slightly. “It’s not just about you hurting him. It’s about us, the family. Every time you hurt him, you hurt all of us.”
“Alisha,” Renzo urged softly, stepping forward to place a hand on her arm. “We’re all hurting. We need to move forward, not stay stuck in the past.”
Rafael’s jaw clenched, and for the first time, he stepped forward, closing the distance between them. He didn’t reach out, didn’t try to touch her, but his presence alone was overwhelming.
“I know,” he said softly, his voice laced with regret. “I know I’ve hurt this family. And I will spend every day making up for it, if you’ll let me.”
Alisha’s breath hitched, her emotions swirling inside her. She wanted to stay angry, to keep blaming him for everything. But the man standing in front of her now wasn’t the same as before. This Rafael—bloodied, vulnerable, and desperate to protect them—was different.
She opened her mouth to speak, but the words wouldn’t come. Instead, tears welled up in her eyes, and for the first time in a long time, she let herself feel something other than anger. She didn’t trust him yet, not fully. But maybe, just maybe, she could try.
Xian, sensing the shift in the air, stepped forward, placing a gentle hand on Alisha’s shoulder. “It’s okay,” he whispered, his voice soothing. “We’ll figure this out together.”
“Yeah, Alisha,” Morgana added softly, moving closer. “We’re all in this together. We can’t let our past tear us apart now.”
Alisha nodded, not trusting herself to speak. She glanced at Rafael one last time, her eyes filled with a mixture of uncertainty and hope. Then, without another word, she turned and walked away, needing space to process everything.
Rafael watched her go, his chest heavy with the weight of what had just transpired. He wasn’t sure if he had truly reached her, but at least now, there was a sliver of hope. He looked at Xian, who smiled softly at him, his eyes filled with quiet understanding.
“We’re making progress,” Xian said gently.
Rafael nodded, though the road ahead still seemed long and uncertain. But for the first time, he felt like they had a real chance at healing—at becoming a family again.
