I didn't expect anything from her when I confessed how I felt. I knew she had these walls around her and didn't want to break them, I wanted her to slowly let me in, to open these walls. If she is not ready right now then that's fine because I know she feels something. She may not realise it right now but I know she does.
When I think about today, it feels like a dream. A dream for which I will never wake up. A dream that was better than reality but wait it is reality. She isn't a dream, she is real, and I can do anything to be with her, so if time is what she needs, I will wait for her as long as she wants. She decided to stay silent throughout the car ride, I thought that it could happen. I decided not to ask any further questions and give her some space.
When we arrived , she had the same expression she had when we arrived at the aquarium but this time she was wrong , she definitely doesn't know this place.
‘Seriously captain, you thought i have never been to the fort tower highway’. She rolled her eyes.
‘No cherry, it isn't the location, let's get out of the car so I can take you’. I replied with a slight sarcastic undertone.
‘You want me to get out in the middle of the highway?’ She was scared and it was weird but she looked cute like that.
‘It isn't in the middle T, I have parked at the side. Please trust me? I said.
‘Okay fine’. She replied and got out of the car.
‘Okay hold my hand and just follow me’.
She did as I told her and then we walked straight towards the withholding construction sign.
‘I think we can't go there, there is a construction sign’.
‘That sign has been there for 7 years.’ I said and then went inside an underpass. When we came out of the underpass she looked at me and squeezed my hand and said
‘This is amazing, wow, how do you know about this place, how is nobody else here? Thank you Rivaan , it's the most beautiful place I have ever seen.’ She almost hugged me. Almost.
This place was actually exquisite. The road winds alongside a crystal blue river, a rare sight to find these days. Massive road bumpers also served as oversized benches, offering a perfect spot to sit, relax and admire the river's view.
‘How do you know about this place,’ She asked as he practically dragged me towards the road bumpers. I helped her to sit on them and then got up and sat next to her.
‘Ah- how do I know about this place, promise me you wont feel any kind of guilt about this?’ I said
‘Why? Why would I feel guilty?
Okay doesn't matter, I won't now please tell me’. She replied
‘My mother, she had her car accident here but i knew this place before that. It was different, there used to be stalls of foods and toys. We used to come here once a month since i was a child.
7 years ago, she was going to meet my dad and it was pouring rain and the road was under construction , somebody placed the wrong sign and she went to the wrong side and by the time she realised it, it was too late and her car hit the truck which had rebars and she was dead on the spot.
I didn't realise when she pulled me in her arms but I was there, she held me tightly and said,
‘I'm so sorry Rivaan, you were just 17 back then’. She rubbed my back and continued,
‘You are the strongest yet the kindest person i have ever met. I have no idea how you handled it. I'm so proud of you and I'm so sorry that you had to go through that.’ She pulled away and held my face with her fingers and wiped the tears I didn't realise were there.
‘I'm not the good person you think I am’ I replied as I lowered my head.
‘I know what kind of a person you are, Rivaan. You are the kind of person who comforts a total stranger, who takes her to the place she has never been to make her feel special, who thinks about the other person's guilt over their grief. Rivaan, you are a good human being, a good son and your mother is proud of the person you have become. Don't beat yourself for something that wasn't your fault’. She said as she took me for a hug.
I held her tightly, tears streamed down my face, all those things that happened six years ago flashed in my eyes, the terror I felt, the misery, the regrets all came running towards me. The only thing that offered me solace was her presence, her touch and her voice,
‘ I'm here for you, you can cry, it's fine.
Im here , you are fine , it will all be fine
Shh- honey, it's fine , you are good, you are safe’. She caressed my hair.
I stayed like this for a few minutes, as silent tears rolled down my face. I slowly pulled away from her and she wiped the tears from my face.
‘It was my fault’.I told her.
