Savi sat in the corner of the library, her books spread across the table, but her focus was nowhere near the pages in front of her. She had been trying to concentrate for hours, yet the words blurred into meaningless shapes. Her mind was occupied by something—or rather, someone—else.
Rajat.
It had been days since their emotional conversation, and things were supposed to feel lighter between them, but Savi's heart hadn't settled. She was still battling her internal conflict—her desire to succeed in her IAS goals and her deepening feelings for Rajat. She had thought they could find a balance, but something was off. She couldn't shake the nagging fear that getting too close to him would somehow jeopardize everything she had worked for.
Her phone buzzed on the table, snapping her out of her thoughts. A message from Priya, one of her classmates, popped up.
Priya: "Savi, I just saw Rajat near the law block talking to some girl. They looked really close. Do you know her?"
Savi frowned, her fingers hovering over the keyboard. She wasn't sure how to respond, and before she could, a second message followed.
Priya: "They're still there, chatting. She's laughing at something he said."
A knot twisted in Savi's stomach. She quickly typed a response.
Savi: "What girl?"
Priya: "Not sure, but she's pretty. They seemed... familiar, if you know what I mean."
Her heart rate quickened, and curiosity got the better of her. Savi stood, gathering her things in a rush, and hurried toward the law block, ignoring the voice in her head that told her she was being ridiculous. She wasn't the kind of girl who got jealous, but the image of Rajat smiling at some other girl, making her laugh, was gnawing at her.
When she reached the law block, Savi scanned the area, her gaze searching for Rajat. And then, she saw him.
He was standing by the steps, deep in conversation with a girl—tall, with dark, wavy hair that fell perfectly over her shoulders. She was dressed in trendy clothes, her posture relaxed, as though she belonged there by his side. The way she leaned into him, laughing at something he said, made Savi's chest tighten.
Rajat smiled at the girl, his expression open and warm, and something inside Savi twisted sharply. She hadn't seen him smile like that in days. That easy, carefree look—something she had once been a part of. But now, it seemed like she had been replaced.
Savi froze, her feet rooted to the ground. Her first instinct was to walk away, to forget she had ever come. But a flare of anger kept her there, watching the scene unfold before her. The girl was touching Rajat's arm now, a casual gesture that felt anything but casual to Savi.
Savi's mind raced. Who was this girl? And why did Rajat look so comfortable around her?
She couldn't hear their conversation from where she stood, but that only made the situation worse. Her thoughts filled in the blanks, painting a picture of Rajat flirting with this girl—someone he clearly knew well. Maybe an ex? Or just someone who had a thing for him?
Either way, it hurt. More than she had expected.
Savi turned on her heel, heading back the way she came, her heart thudding in her chest. She didn't want to see any more. She had already seen enough.
The rest of the day passed in a blur. Savi couldn't focus on her classes, her mind consumed by the image of Rajat and that girl. Her jealousy, a feeling she had never experienced so strongly before, gnawed at her thoughts. She knew she was jumping to conclusions without the full story, but the emotional toll of her feelings for Rajat was already wearing her down. This was just the tipping point.
