The campus buzzed with the chatter of students moving between classes, the air filled with the scent of fresh textbooks and the distant sound of laughter. Savi clutched her books tightly to her chest as she exited her last class, her mind racing with thoughts of Rajat. She had spent the past few days avoiding him, drowning herself in her studies, but guilt gnawed at her.
She rounded the corner, intent on heading to the library, but stopped short when she saw Rajat leaning against the wall, arms crossed, a stormy look in his eyes. Her heart raced at the sight of him. He looked tense, and for a brief moment, Savi felt the urge to turn around and run.
But it was too late. Rajat had spotted her.
"Savi!" he called out, pushing himself off the wall and stepping toward her.
"Rajat, I don't have time—" she began, trying to sidestep him, but he moved to block her path, forcing her to halt.
"Not this time," Rajat said, his voice firm but not unkind. "We need to talk."
Savi felt her defenses rising. "About what? There's nothing to discuss."
His eyes narrowed, and he pulled her and pinned her to the wall, narrowing the space between them. The familiar scent of his cologne surrounded her, and Savi found it hard to breathe. "You're avoiding me. And I want to know why."
Savi shifted, feeling the heat of his body so close to hers. "Maybe I'm just busy. Ever think of that?"
"Busy or hiding?" Rajat countered, his tone growing sharper. "What is it, Savi? Did I do something wrong?"
"Did you? You're the one who's been acting like I don't exist!" Savi snapped back, her frustration spilling over. "And then I see you with that girl—"
"Aisha?" Rajat interrupted, his expression a mix of disbelief and irritation. "She's a classmate. We were just talking about a case study, for God's sake. It's nothing."
"Nothing?" Savi challenged, crossing her arms defensively. "Looks pretty cozy to me."
Rajat's brow furrowed. "You think I'm leading you on? Is that what you really believe?"
"Yes!" she shot back, her voice rising. "I don't know what to think anymore, Rajat. One minute we're close, and the next you're all chummy with someone else."
"I can't believe this," Rajat said, running a hand through his hair in frustration. "You jumped to conclusions without even asking me about it. I thought we had something real, but you're pushing me away because of a misunderstanding?"
The tension crackled between them, the air thick with unspoken feelings. Savi opened her mouth to protest but faltered. "I thought you were... you know, interested in her."
"Why would you think that?" Rajat's voice softened slightly, though his frustration lingered. "I care about you, Savi. Not her. I thought you knew that."
"Then why didn't you say anything?" Savi shot back, her defensiveness crumbling under the weight of his words. "You were just... there. I didn't think I could just assume..."
"Because I'm trying to figure this out too!" he replied, his tone more pleading now. "We're both confused. But you have to understand that I've been trying to give you space. I thought you needed it."
The vulnerability in Rajat's eyes hit Savi like a ton of bricks. She felt her anger waver, replaced by a tumult of emotions she had tried to keep at bay. "You think I wanted this?" she whispered, feeling exposed. "I didn't want to feel anything for you, especially not now. I can't afford distractions."
"Then why do you keep pushing me away?" Rajat asked, his voice low, as he stepped even closer, closing the gap between them. "You're the one who's been acting like I'm the problem, but I'm here trying to be there for you. Can't you see that?"
Savi inhaled sharply, her heart pounding. "I don't want to be a distraction for you either, Rajat. I'm scared that if we get too close, I'll lose focus on everything I've worked for."
He searched her eyes, and for a moment, they were both suspended in the tension of the moment, the world around them fading into the background. "What if you don't have to choose?" he asked softly. "What if we can support each other?"
"Maybe," Savi said, her voice barely above a whisper, unsure of where this was headed. "But I don't want to ruin what we have by getting tangled up in feelings."
Rajat took a deep breath, his expression softening. "I'm not asking for everything all at once. Just... give me a chance to show you that I'm serious about us."
Savi felt her heart clench, torn between the desire to leap into his arms and the fear of the consequences. "I don't know if I can, Rajat."
He pulled her even closer, their bodies touching, his intensity palpable. "You won't know until you try. But please, don't shut me out. I'm here. I want to be here."
As his words washed over her, Savi's defenses crumbled a little more. She looked up at him, feeling vulnerable yet strangely safe in his presence. "I don't want to get hurt," she admitted, her voice barely above a whisper.
"Neither do I," Rajat said, sincerity in his eyes. "But we can't figure this out if you keep avoiding me. Talk to me. Please."
Savi felt her resolve wavering, but fear still held her back. "I just... I need time."
Rajat nodded slowly, his expression softening. "I can give you that. But just know that I'm not going anywhere."
Savi blinked, her heart racing at his words, both comforted and terrified. "Okay," she said finally, taking a shaky breath. "I'll try."
As she took a small step back, the tension began to ease. But the unspoken connection between them lingered, filled with potential and uncertainty.
"Just one more thing," Rajat said, his tone lightening slightly as he teased, "If you see me with another girl, can you at least ask me about it first?"
Savi chuckled softly, the warmth of his smile easing her heart. "Deal."
With that, they shared a moment of understanding, the misunderstandings starting to clear. Although they had much to figure out, Savi felt a flicker of hope ignite within her.
As they parted ways, both aware of the unresolved feelings swirling between them, Savi couldn't help but feel that perhaps they were finally moving in the right direction.
