Sileno had no idea where his parents went. Everyone thought they were dead, but he knew, in his heart, that they weren't. He went on a search through the village, but came up empty handed. He looked every day, everywhere, asking everyone, but no one knew.

He sat in a meadow, crying slightly. His three tails swished behind him, his fox ears folded. Nobody knew he was a kitsune, and he intended to keep it that way. Only his parents knew, but they were long gone. His golden fur glimmered with the sunset, making him look like an angel.

He began to sing an old lullaby he faintly remembered his mother singing to him.

"When does a comet become a meteor?

When does a candle become a blaze?

When does a man become a monster?"

All around him, the plants began to sway with the music. Fireflies lit up to the melody, a nearby pond sloshing towards him as if trying to listen to his voice.

"When does a ripple become a tidal wave?

When does the reason become the blame?

When does a man become a monster?"

He sang the song over and over, each repeat making the elements sway more and more.

He was interrupted by a voice in the distance calling out, "hello?"

The nature around him stopped swinging as soon as the singing ended. Sileno quickly disguised as a human, a little boy with blonde hair and gray eyes.

The voice, much closer, called out again; "hello?"

Sileno went to greet it, being confronted with a man who looked to be about 50 years old. He had a lute strapped to his back and a flute attached to his belt.

"Hello, little one." the man said, leaning down to Sileno's height. "Where are your parents?"

The kitsune was too tired to lie. "They're missing. I don't know where they went."

The man had sympathy in his eyes as he nodded.

"Do you have anywhere to go?" he asked. Sileno shook his head. "If you would like, I can take you back to my house." the man's tone was soft and kind, no malice to be heard. He was so charismatic that it was hard not to agree.

They walked together to a little wood and stone cabin near a village.

"What's your name, kiddo?"

"I'm Sileno."

"Nice to meet you, Sileno. I'm Hector."

Sileno became Hector's apprentice, learning music and all the spells needed to be a bard. Sileno was a fast learner. He obtained a bard's uniform to replace his old ragged clothes. He now wore a green vest with a yellow trim on the neck, along with mahogany pants that he usually kept rolled up.

He finally got to demonstrate his elemental singing at a campfire sing along during a festival. He accidentally made all the small campfires into huge bonfires while singing a fast paced song. Thankfully it wasn't too destructive, only a minor inconvenience as some of the food was instantly charred. He decided to never sing near fire again after that.

After two years of disguising as a human, he felt the urge to become a kitsune again. Hector said he'd be gone for a few hours, so Sileno let his true form out once more.

His three tails wagged with relief, his ears perking up gratefully. He looked at his front paws, where the fur darkened to a bronze color. It almost looked like he had gloves.

He sighed contentedly, but the tranquility was short lived as Hector entered the home again.

The human stared in shock at the three-tailed anthropomorphic fox sitting in his living room.

The kitsune cowered in fear and shame.

'I-I, um..." Sileno couldn't find his voice. He started tearing up, thinking his only friend would disown him.

Hector silently walked towards him, but instead of yelling or hitting him or something, he hugged him. Sileno hugged back, shocked. He began to sob into Hector's shoulder.

"I understand why you would keep this from me." he said after a long silence. "I'm not mad, just surprised. I'm proud of you, Sileno. You're talented, funny, strong, brave, and the best wielder of vicious mockery I've ever seen. You being a kitsune doesn't change that. I care about you more than anything."

Sileno sobbed harder with each word. His relief was overwhelming. He couldn't put any words together, but his crying said all that he needed to say. Even if his real parents were gone, he still had someone he could lean on. He was grateful, he was relieved, and he wished he could stay here, in this moment, forever.

But it didn't last forever.

He eventually became an adventurer, but not just to look for his family.

He wanted to make the one who took him in proud.
