(Hyleo's pov)

Today is the day. I get to meet Reyu's parents. I didn't know how to feel. I was scared, excited, nervous, like my body couldn't decide on an emotion.

I calmed a little as we boarded the boat. I knew a lot about the sea. I could sense every wave, the course of the currents, our coordinates, our direction... even the monsters lurking in the depths. But I decided not to tell her that.

I started humming an old sea shanty to take my mind off the bad stuff. I didn't even catch myself staring at Reyu. She reminded me of my first mate back before the Shadow. It was mostly the personality. Kind, open, friendly, caring, I could go on and on. I may have had a crush on him, but alas, the shadow claimed his soul. He's gone now.

But then, a thousand years later, there's Reyu. I felt something for her. I wasn't sure if it was a crush or if I just cared for her. But the feeling was definitely there.

If it was love, I doubted it was reciprocated. Who would ever love a cursed, 2 hundred year old pirate with pitch black eyes?

My mind continued to wander as I watched the water swirl. It lapped against the hull, creating seafoam the color of Reyu's eyes. I could get lost in those eyes forever.

"Alright!" Reyu exclaimed suddenly, breaking my train of thought. I jumped a little in surprise. "We should be there by morning."

"Oh! That's good timing! Back in my day it took months to get places!" I said happily. She lightly giggled. Her braid swung in the breeze, her eyes sparkling like the sun on an empty glass bottle.

A little while later I heard beautiful singing. At first I was worried, since it almost sounded like a siren, but I wasn't getting drawn off the boat. I followed the sound and found Reyu, sitting on a box and singing her heart out. I was entranced. Her voice was so beautiful.

She jumped as she saw me, blushing in embarrassment. I sat next to her, an awed smile on my face.

"That was the best singing I've ever heard..." I said quietly. She blushed even harder.

"Really?"

"Of course! It was better than a siren!" I exclaimed.

"Siren? As in those monsters that sing so beautifully that people throw themselves off the ship?" She inquired.

"Well, that's not exactly what thier powers do. It's not how they sing that lures, it's what." I explained. She tilted her head. "I've heard them before. They sing about you, things you didn't even know about yourself. They reveal your fatal flaw." I sighed. "Their singing gives you visions that fill you with indescribable want. Until you get lured in. But if you survive, you become wiser."

Reyu thought for a moment. "What was your vision about?"

(Flashback to the encounter)

I screamed and cried for my crew to untie me from the mast. I struggled as hard as I could, all I wanted was to be an explorer! Why couldn't I have that?! The joy and treasure of finding new lands was right in front of me, but I just couldn't reach it. I saw a memory of my childhood self climbing onto a roof because I saw a strange bird up there. I saw myself looking at artifacts I didn't know existed. I saw things that looked so interesting, so fascinating, but I couldn't touch them.

"Please! I can't take this anymore! Let me go!" I cried to my crew. Tears streamed down my face, my sobbing loud. I was heartbroken.

My throat was sore by the time the ship got out of range of the sirens' song.

"You alright, captain?" My first mate, Archer, asked. I barely choked out a response.

"Aye, I'm alright." I wasn't really. They untied my hands, my wrists raw from my struggling.

"Wow cap'n, you must have really wanted those sirens, ey?" Another crew member said. I sighed.

"I didn't want them. I wanted what they showed me."

A small murmur of confusion swept across the ship.

"My fatal flaw is curiosity."

(End of flashback)

I looked at the horizon longingly. My flaw had already taken its toll. My entire crew killed, a thousand years lost, not because of the Shadow, but by my stupid decision to find it.

My decision to take the helm.
